Tax Topic 203

I filed the tax refund with married joint return, checked the status this morning with the where's my refund tool with the notice.

Your tax refund has been approved for direct deposit.

However, it may be partially or completely reduced to pay a past due obligation, such as child support, another federal agency debt, or state income tax. If so, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service (BFS), who issues IRS refunds, will send you a notice with the amount of the debt and contact information. The details of the debt are not provided to the IRS. This application will be updated with the refund amount remaining, if any, after the debt is deducted.

The refund amount on the page is still the same, I called the Treasury Offset Program automated number, using my info it says no debt. After trying again with my wife to see if hers has anything the touch keys are not registering with there system. Does anyone have any information to help us out?

Did you ever receive your refund?

Not yet.  Scheduled for the 11th.  But offsets were taken.  Call the number and press option 2 after you select your language.  If you know how much you are supposed to get back and the  listen to the message and it will tell you how much the offset was taken and the date it will take from your scheduled refund.   IRS website checking account transcript only shows say if you owe past due amounts to only IRS.  If you check your account transcript it will give you your refund date along with amount.  But if you owe and you know you do then call that offset line.  Remember it gets updated every 24 hours.

Press option 2 with TOP.  It gets updated every 24hours.  203 is something you owe not a debt.  Maybe state past taxes, SSI, state run programs as well can offset.

My husband And I used to have county assistance and they took almost 3k from us.

Even though we entered into an agreement to pay..they still took it.  Even if you fight the claim and provide information..operator error like ours..they still come after you even though it's there fault.  Good luck

I logged into WMR and saw that I have a 203 code and I couldn't figure out why. I called the BFS and was told that I owed state taxes to Louisiana. I don't know how that is possible because I haven't been a resident of Louisiana for 5 years. I moved out to TX, went to school, am currently living in the same apartment from 2015 to now. I made sure to update my mailing address and everything. I even switched over my car registration and I can't understand how I owe them state income tax for a state that I haven't resided in for over 5 years. It makes no sense. Furthermore, when I called Louisiana, the person who picked up had no idea what I was talking about. I need my refund, I am moving soon and I need that money to pay bills. This is so frustrating!!! Could someone please provide me with some insight?

As long as your direct deposit information was on your tax refund, they will have your direct deposit information.
