I filed in April 2023. Today, 5/25 I opened Turbo Tax and it asked me to update it. After that I saw the amount of my federal tax refund was different from when I filed. When I exited, it did not ask my to save but when I looked at the timestamp of my file, it was updated to 5/25. How do I get back the copy I had in April? Why is the amount changed? I did not do anything other than update Turbo Tax. Will this be a problem when I file next year coz the amount is not consistent anymore from the amount I filed. Do I need to file an amended return so IRS has this new copy?

Your updating the program did NOT change the original filing... the IRS gets no further filings after the original has been accepted for processing. Once you have filed you should not allow further updates unless you are prepared to address any changes. Hopefully you saved a .taxfile & PDF of the original return somewhere other than the hard drive so you can compare the original return against the updated one to find the differences. Once you know what changed then you can decide the proper course of action if any.
I have a .taxfile and .pdf dated 4/15 but when I open the .taxfile it shows the changed amount and when I exit, it saves and overwrites my .taxfile and the date on the timestamp becomes 5/25. Before if anything changed I would be prompted to save or not. But today even though I didn't make any changes it autosaves and overwrites what was in my 4/15 .taxfile.
Since you have the pdf can you tell what changed? Go into Forms mode and compare the pdf file to the amounts. What lines are different?
Good idea! Here's what I found. There is a field called Credit for Prior Year Minimum Tax that got filled with an amount of $500. And there is a form schedule 3 and smart worksheet 8801 with calculations using values from form 6251 and 8801 from year 2021. So based on this I was supposed to get an additional $500 refund. But I've no idea how come Turbo tax did not include this when I filed and is including it now.
It is possible that those forms were not yet fully functional when you filed originally ... there should have been a warning about it.
do i need to file an amendment? would like my $500 😄
I have the exact same problem, slightly different. It updated and saved my original return and ADDED Post Filing errors. There are now error flags in this saved form. All red alerts were resolved when I filed 3/5/24.
Also I realized I was missing the form 8606 for conversion to Roth. it was for this reason I wnt back to get it create one.
I am long time user of Turbo Tax and I wondering if I should use it any more.
