Someone else filed for my tax return and got approved but that was not me. How can I fix this?
How can I fix this mess.
There must be more to the story. But be aware this is a public user forum, so don't post any personal info in this forum. When you explain more, someone may be able to make some suggestions on what all you need to do.
Is this a 2021 return? If so, how do you know someone filed a 2021 return using your personal info?
And how do you also know that it was "approved" by the IRS? By the word "approved" are you saying the IRS approved and has paid the Federal refund to someone? Or do you mean an efiled return was "accepted" for processing?
And what is the actual situation with you and your own 2021 return--did you already file (or tried to file) a return in your name as well? Or are you getting ready to file one?
Was the improper 2021 return in question prepared and efiled through your Online TurboTax account? i.e., has your online account been compromised?
In addition to the information that mesquitebean asked for, do you know who filed a tax return in your name, or do you have a suspicion about who it was? Was it someone who knows you and has access to your personal information?
I signed into turbotax to file my 2021 taxes and when I e-filed my federal return it was rejected by the IRS within 2 hours saying my married filing jointly 2021 tax return had already been filed and paid out on feb.14,2021. I have been out of the states for the last year so I just now got a chance to try to file my taxes. Whoever filed them imported my 2020 tax file to the 2021 return and used all the information that was in the return. So they, turbotax can't tell me they don't have a data breach because I'm hear to prove they do. And know this, I plan on sueing the crap out of them.
@chantelpayton20 If your e-file was rejected because someone already used your Social Security number on a 2021 tax return, then you can still file your tax return but you must file it by mail. You cannot get past an IRS rejection for a duplicate Social Security number. Mail your return and let the IRS sort out the problem.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Two things are confusing in that statement. If that date of "Feb. 14, 2021" is correct, that would be a 2020 tax return, not 2021. Tax year 2020 was the current tax return back then. Is that the correct date you meant to type, or was that a typo?
Secondly, an efile rejection notice from the IRS doesn't provide any info about whether a refund has been paid or the date of a refund, so it's not clear where that information about the rejection saying it was "paid out on Feb. 14, 2021" came from.
