Amended returns are taking 6 months or more. And you shouldn't have amended until the first original return was fully processed and you got the first refund or paid the tax due.
You will still get the refund from the first original return or still need to pay the first tax due. Then the amended return is only for the difference you get back or owe. I think the cover sheet shows what the original return WOULD have been if you did it right the first time.
Go by the actual 1040X. Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 22 should be your additional refund. If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16. If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.
You amended only hours after e-filing? Sorry---you should wait for your original return to be fully processed before you amend. Amended returns are processed differently and are currently taking more than six months to be processed. You are going to be waiting for awhile. And.....putting an amended return into the system at the same time as the original may cause extra confusion and delay. Do not send in anything else. Just WAIT.
Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return. During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six months or more for many amended returns. Do not expect quick results from amending. When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check. They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns. You can watch for information here:

TurboTax charged me A LOT to speak to a live person the first person who filed my return hung up on me when I questioned the numbers on my return when proofreading it! So I spent several more hours speaking with what was supposed to be a LEAD / MANAGER who is the person who filed my amendment! And told me to pay the AMMENDED amount due which I did! Plus both returns say ACCEPTED BY THE IRS.
I swear the TurboTax people who were supposed to know what they were doing have now made things worse!
**** so you are saying I should do nothing right now? *** in past dealings with the IRS I’m fairly certain they probably won’t help either!
It was TurboTax live help the manager who filed my AMMENDED return hours after the first one was accepted! Matter fact spoke to four different TurboTax CPA’s who all said once the first return showed accepted to go ahead a do the amendment! I can’t tell y’all how I regret not paying the full tax on the cares money I took off my 401k on last years tax return! This has been a nightmare!
So what do I do? Do I respond to the letter asking me to pay the original filing amount? Do I pay it? Or just wait until they get around to my AMMENDED return?
Thanks for your help!
Oh did you have a tax due on the original return? Yes you need to pay that. Read my post above again.
Thank you I clicked the site and called the number it says my AMMENDED return was received on 4-18-22 and is being processed!
Guess I just wait since I don’t have $2000 to send them on top of the $1549 I already sent! UGH!
thank you
Yes I paid the AMMENDED amount due on tax day!
@Shekei - figure it could be 9-12 months before the amendment is processed. The IRS is woefully behind.
