The IRS will start processing returns on January 29, 2024. If you already submitted your return, it is in a queue waiting for the IRS to start letting returns come in. A social security number can only be processed through electronic filing once as a taxpayer and/or dependent.
If two people try to claim the same dependent, the first person to file and have their return acknowledged by the IRS will have their return electronically processed through efile. The second person who tries to claim the same dependent will have their return rejected and have to paper file if they want to claim the dependent.
If you have already submitted your return, you will just need to wait now until your return is acknowledged or rejected by the IRS. There is no way to know the order returns sitting in a queue waiting for the IRS to open will go in.
Ok. I was told n under the impression that it was a first come first serve basis, per the IRS. I was told that if a person efiles Their federal tax return before the IRS accepts them that it just sits in line in a queue. Pretty much until the IRS starts accepting. I'm improcessing them so therefore, it would be a first comparison basis. That is what the eye arrests told me
I was told that while they are sitting in a queue. Waiting to be processed that when the IRS does start accepting. Think it was the first come first serve. Therefore, if I filed mine before him mine. Would that accept it first? But for the IRS starts accepting and processing them.
@Nmont The IRS takes a small "test batch" ahead of the date that they open up for accepting/rejecting all the other e-files. But even if they take your return in that batch, you will wait until late February for your refund if you are getting earned income credit or additional child tax credit. As for "first come first serve"--don't count on that.
If you already e-filed, chances are your return is going to sit on the server until at least January 29, when the IRS begins to accept/reject e-files.
This was my first year filing with TurboTax. I was recommended. I am very disappointed in the website in the processing, and in the explanations that you all give in regards to processing and excepting returns.. it has also been over 48 hours going on a week now that I have found my I have not been able to get back into my account to check on the status of my state or federal. There’s no information you are just keep give me the same repeated quoted Texas under everybody’s.. turboTax should do better and not be so quick to take innocent peoples money.
@Mseave The IRS will not begin to accept/reject e-files until January 29. Until the IRS opens, you will not get any information about whether your e-file has been accepted or rejected. You are waiting for the IRS.
Sometime on or after January 29, you will get an email telling you if your return was accepted or rejected. Meanwhile, do not try to make any changes to your return. You cannot change it now--it is in pending on a server.
Unless you are an actual turbo tax employee please do not try to tell me about January 29th I as well as 2 of my employees found on the same day in my office theirs was accepted they got their events mine is still pending. Explain that and I have screenshots time state documents that shows that. So I don't wanna hear anything about January 29th this is my first year filing with turbotax and I will NEVER file again
Every single tax year the IRS will pull small batches of tax return to test out their systems ahead of the official start date. Those returns, if truly accepted by the IRS, were part of those batches. However, those returns will not be processed until the IRS opens on the date they have specified.

I’m going through the same issue! Please tell me you had some resolution? What ended up happening with yours? I’m going on a week pending when turbo tax issued a 48 hour hold.

The IRS just opened today for accepting or rejecting tax returns. Your federal tax return should be processed at any time on or after 01/29/2024 by the IRS.
I filed Jan 29pm 6pm est and my friend at the same time. She’s been accepted immediately and I’m stuck in pending…. The only thing that changed this year is that I made a new account because I’m filing separately since my spouse and I are no longer together. He filed his return 20 mins ago and it was accepted instantly!
why is it still pending? Makes no sense! 3 days!
I see your post was from last year about it pending for days, how long did it end up taking for it to be accepted by the IRS?
I am going through the same exact thing with the hold from turbo tax. Can you tell me how long it took for your notification of accepted or rejected? @Kendra684
Hey quick question how did you end up working this out ?
