Per the IRS, if your payment can’t be delivered to you for any reason (such as the stimulus payment being deposited into an account that is closed), it will be returned to the IRS. You are supposed to be able to correct the deposit information with Get My Payment tool.
Please check Get My Payment if your status changed to “Need More Information.” Then you can update your direct deposit information. Otherwise the IRS will mail you a check.
Same thing happened to me. i dont know why they would do that if the bank rejected it the first time. I also thought Turbo tax provided them with the updated bank information with the second stimulus. Its very frustrating.
TurboTax is working closely with the IRS and have confirmed with them that they have accurate banking information for TurboTax filers.
Be aware that, at some point, this IRS FAQ will come into play. We do not know when.
This IRS FAQ My payment was mailed but my post office was unable to deliver it. states:
Once we receive your payment back, you may be able to provide your bank account information in Get My Payment to have your payment reissued as a direct deposit.
If this is the case, then Get My Payment will show “Need More Information,” usually two to three weeks after the payment is issued. At this point, you can enter a routing and account number for your bank account, prepaid debit card or alternative financial product that has a routing and account number associated with it.
If you do not provide account information, your payment will be reissued when we receive an updated address.
Follow the TurboTax COVID Tax Center and the IRS Economic Impact Payment Information Center as further updates are issued by the IRS.
How is this statement accurate if clearly the IRS has went and deposited the third stimulus payment to the wrong account twice. Now i have to wait for the bank to reject it a second time.
If the account was closed or no longer active, the bank is required to return the deposit. Your payment will be issued as a check to the address we have on file for you. This is generally the address on your most recent tax return or as updated through the United States Postal Service (USPS).
Questions and Answers about the Third Economic Impact Payments — Topic G: Receiving My Payment
I understand that, but why did they go and try again to deposit on a closed account twice. That is what I am getting at. If it gets rejected the first time (March 17th) why try again on a closed account on March 31st again, makes no sense. They should of mailed a check instead. Thats what the original person that posted this topic was asking and so am I.
Same here and all I get from TurboTax “experts” is crap copied and pasted from the IRS website like I’m an idiot. No one has an actual answer and it’s so frustrating that TurboTax can’t answer and the IRS blames it on TurboTax
The standard practice for the IRS to handle a returned deposit, because it was sent to a closed bank account, is that he bank sends it back and they change it to a paper check and mail it to the address on the tax return. It's not a new practice, however there were some issues with the second stimulus on the deposit.
If your address on your tax return is correct, there is no need for concern. In a year when so many changes did not take place, the time frame would be anywhere from 4 - 6 weeks.
This year has brought challenges. The IRS is required to reconcile the tax returns and stimulus payments as well as working on the third stimulus payments due to the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). With the tax season and the changes taking place all at once, a delay should be expected for full payments. They want to be diligent and are required to follow any protocols they have been issued. They will make any adjustments and additional payments as they complete the process.
Same thing happened to me. Deposited to the wrong account the 17th and again on the 26th. TurboTax gentlemen told me “I’m not the IRS” and then hung up on me. I can’t even get through to the IRS to inquire about what the hell is going on. SO frustrating.
If the account was closed, you have little reason to worry — though your payment will be delayed. According to the Internal Revenue Service, if a stimulus payment goes to an account that is closed, the bank will reject the money.
Then, the Internal Revenue Service will look at the mailing address it has on file so the check can be sent by mail instead.
The agency is also required to send you a letter in the mail within 15 days, providing “information on how the Payment was made and how to report any failure to receive the Payment.”
But it would be worth your time to contact your bank and ensure that the check was in fact rejected. Then, go back into the Get My Payment portal to make sure your mailing address is up to date.
It may be easier to contact a Taxpayer Assistance Center Local IRS Office
Not what you emailed me regarding the 3rd stimulus check just 9 days ago. So what’s the truth this doesn’t match my email at all!
And again they sent my payment on the 17th of March was returned to them on the 17th of March sent it again to the same closed account on the 31st so that’s the issue.
Maybe we should all just ban together to file a class action law suit against intuit and turbo tax since this seems to be their fault and we can't get any answers.
