IRS has no record of my filing

The following TurboTax article provides steps you can take to fix a rejected return. There is also a link in the article for "Common IRS rejection codes".

@Lunapig79   that’s good that they gave you your refund. I’m still waiting on mine. I had to do taxes to claim the first and second stimulus checks that I never received I filed my 2020 taxes on 2/16 and my status says that my taxes return is still being processed. I’m hoping that they will add the third stimulus check with it since I’m qualified for all 3 stimulus checks. I’m hoping that I get a refund date too

If your tax return was rejected, then it was not filed.   You would either need to correct the issue that caused the rejection and re-submit it for electronic filing OR file the return by mail.  If you opted file the return by mail, you will have to wait for the IRS to receive and process the return before it shows up on Where's My Refund.  @Lunapig79

You can use the tool to start checking on the status of your return within 24 hours after we have received your e-filed return or 4 weeks after you mail a paper return. Where’s My Refund? has a tracker that displays progress through 3 stages: (1) Return Received, (2) Refund Approved and (3) Refund Sent.

When you say ''gave me my federal income refund'' - are you saying that you received your refund or that the screen showed you the amount of your refund?

IRS has no record of my filing

Well it is 2021 and the IRS has no record of a tax return filed via Turbo Tax on March 9, 2021.

What is going on with TurboTax?

You can log into TurboTax to check the status of your return.  If you see that it was accepted by the IRS, it is in their control at this point.  TurboTax was used to prepare your return and submit your taxes when you complete the File section of the program.  Please see the following link for steps to check your e-file status.

IRS has no record of my filing

I wanted to follow up on my situation:

1) We checked online and my husband's transcript/ Account now reflects our 2020 return and is  being processed  The entire return is there. We did not receive the #2 stimulus, so we took the credit on our return. We filed MFJ. It also list my son as a dependent. So, this is a win.

2) On my transcript, I still do not have any information on any returns. For the 2020, it says married filed separate. It has my address where I lived 20 years ago. However, on the wages section, they do have some 1099's with my current address. This is so messed up.

I think I may have to make copies of my returns and send them to the IRS because there is no reason they should not have this information. My husband and I have filed jointly for 24 years. Anyway, the wheels of progress will continue to turn.

You are doing the right thing in such unexpected circumstances. Here are some more tips to help: There are different types of transcripts. To see everything, payments and refunds issued, etc., get Record of Account transcripts.

It may be useful to contact a local IRS taxpayer advocate. Be forewarned that others are reporting long hold times if they get through at all.

IRS has no record of my filing

I file my taxes March 14th the i r s said they did not have it but TurboTax says they have accepted it but the IRS has no file on it I cannot talk to anybody on TurboTax to help me I'm getting real upset I'm trying to talk to a representative but it's all recordings

If TT says the return was accepted for processing then there is nothing that TT can possibly help you with.  The IRS is behind in processing and millions of returns are still in the Q and they are only answering 7% of the phone calls  and the taxpayer advocate office is also overwhelmed and understaffed for the amount of requests for help it is getting this year so even they cannot help.

So as already stated on this thread and others all  you really can do is wait  and check the IRS WMR?  tool weekly until you see progress.

First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

If the IRS accepted it, what does it say here?

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

You need your filing status, your Social Security number (first person listed as taxpayer not the spouse)  and the exact amount  (line 34 of your Form 1040) of your federal refund only (not the state + fed on the summary screen)  from the ORIGINALLY filed return (before any of the tax law changes came into play )to track your Federal refund.

IRS has no record of my filing

I'm in same boat, filed in March 2021, turbo Tax said it was accepted.  email next day from IRS said accepted, i went online to IRS.gov and requested a transcript and it says no return was filed for 2020. Now i'm stuck - you can't get a hold a real person at Turbo Tax --this is likely to be the last time i use the product.

Also can't get a person at the IRS.

IRS has no record of my filing

Yesterday, I got through after a 30 minute hold time and talked to the IRS about my issue where a 2020 1040 I e-filed 20-Apr-2021 from TurboTax shows as not filed.

I learned a few things:

1) If your return gets diverted to a department for errors/corrections, the department that shows return status at IRS.GOV will show the return as not filed and any transcript will also show the return as not filed

2) The errors/corrections department says their timeframe is 10 weeks, but in my case they did not receive the return until a month after I electronically filed which is when they start the 10 week clock.

3) If they miss the 10 weeks, these days they will just say they are working through a historic backlog.

4) MOST INTERESTING - whether or not you have a refund coming, you can check status using the IRS "Where is my refund" function on the website or app (for no refund enter $1 as the refund amount) and it will at least confirm the IRS has your return and is working on it without having to go through the time suck of calling the IRS. This won't tell you and ETA, but based on the previous point there is no useful ETA so nothing lost, and at least you have the peace of mind to know the IRS has your return.

Errors/corrections could be anything, a discrepancy between your return and the W2/1099/etc the IRS has directly, a calculation error, etc. If they eventually find an issue you will get a letter indicating the correction and next actions if any, if not then your return will just finally show as processed and then you can get a transcript.

It's entirely frustrating that IRS.GOV and the transcript show "not filed" instead of "processing" or "checking for error" as a status, but that is apparently where things stand.

IRS has no record of my filing

1) If your return gets diverted to a department for errors/corrections, the department that shows return status at IRS.GOV will show the return as not filed and any transcript will also show the return as not filed   As usual until the return is processed it will not show up on the transcript site ... this is SOP.

2) The errors/corrections department says their timeframe is 10 weeks, but in my case they did not receive the return until a month after I electronically filed which is when they start the 10 week clock.  Normal times it is 10 weeks however we are not in normal times.  The IRS computer may send out a "60 day notice" saying the return will need more time to process.

3) If they miss the 10 weeks, these days they will just say they are working through a historic backlog.  Due to all the last minute changes and the fact they cannot hire and train staff fast enough there is a "historic backlog" so if you want to complain do so to your local congress person since congress are  the ones making last minute tax law changes in the middle of a filing season of which some are retroactive  AND  they  have reduced the IRS budget every year for more than a decade so they are doing less with less.

Never heard of this before but it is a nice trick to know.   If the TT site says the return was accepted for processing then they do have it even if the WMR?  tool doesn't acknowledge it.

The errors and corrections department is the "catch all" department where returns needing human attention go and they normally handle a couple million returns all year but they had more than  40 million returns dumped on them all at once which of course they were ill prepared to handle ... again yell at congress for their poor timing of all these changes.   Staffing has been an issue this year due to the extended unemployment benefits where people find they make more by staying home.  Even if they could hire more help you cannot just "train them for a day on how to work the grill" like at McDonalds ... training at the IRS takes weeks.

End result is everything needed a human to look at it is taking much much longer then in a normal tax year and thus patience will be needed by all parties again this year.
