Intuit seems to have incorrect information on e-file for 1040-X

Apparently nothing is going to convince you.  So keep trying to e-file it.  Let us know how that works out for you.

Yes, you can't convince me that I can't e-file since I do know how to read.  It looks like nothing can convince you which is a bit odd.  I'm really confused at how you interpret the obvious.  Of course e-file is not working now but again since I know how to read, I know that it should work.

I would wait for the IRS to open efiling in late January (maybe around Jan 24).  Then see if Turbo Tax lets you efile a 2021 1040X.  Right now nothing can be efiled.  Well TT lets you submit returns but it is just stored on TT servers until the IRS starts pulling them.

@tetsuwanatomu   Just saw this FAQ  updated 2 days ago.   It says......

The TurboTax amend process for 2021 will be available soon. When it's ready, you can e-file your 2021 1040-X.

Thanks, I'll wait a few weeks.

@tetsuwanatomu   And just checking....you efiled the original 2021 return from Turbo Tax and it was Accepted?  Did you use the Online version or the Desktop program?

Intuit seems to have incorrect information on e-file for 1040-X

I use the desktop version and my 1040 was e-filed with Turbotax in March 2022.   I would have thought that you can send an amended form in anytime after filing but all my searches just found that it has to be done within 3 years, didn't find any info how the soonest you can send in the amended form.

If you are amending a prior year, you can mail it in right now, and beat the rush.

The thing is

when you e-File 1040-X, in the current season, the tax software sends the entire tax return again.

This will only work now for 2022 1040-X.

Also, TurboTax delays 1040-X filing for some time after IRS opens for 1040 filing.

When you paper file 1040-X, attach the required pages as outlined above.

Verify your are entering the correct tax year that your amendment is about.

In Part III explanation you're supposed to give details about your changes.

Intuit seems to have incorrect information on e-file for 1040-X

I finally reached TurboTax tech support. The agent checked with her supervisor and was told TurboTax can not e-file amended tax returns.   So it appears this was never implemented nor are there any plans to ever support e-filing amended forms at least for tax years 2019 to 2021.  So even though the IRS accepts amended forms via e-file and TurboTax in numerous pages states you can e-file amended tax returns it is just a lie as it never existed nor will it exist so don't need to wait and now I have to mail it.

@tetsuwanatomu

So sorry this has been confusing.  I've checked with a TurboTax Moderator to get this cleared up, as I'm sure many have the same question.  Your info from TurboTax Support is correct.  Even though the IRS is accepting e-filed 1040-X from some software providers, TurboTax has yet to implement this change into their software.  It's unlikely that this change will be implemented into the 2022 software, either.   Your patience is much appreciated.

Intuit seems to have incorrect information on e-file for 1040-X

@tetsuwanatomu I had the exact same frustrations and experience. I tried to amend my 2020 return, and TurboTax gives all indications that it will file the amended return electronically, until the very last step at which point it says unsuccessful/unable to transmit. And to confuse matters more, I called TurboTax customer support twice, and was told both times that I COULD e-file my amended return. So Intuit's own employees don't know how it works.

To add insult to injury, my problem was caused by TurboTax not properly calculating differences in mortgage interest deductions between Fed & State - a basic, simple thing. The software also completely failed in accounting for a mortgage I refinanced after the 2017 tax law revision.

The amount of paper and ink I wasted and the amount of time I've put into this is absurd.

Appreciate your help. I found this tread because I was unable to e-file my 2021 1040X. I was on the phone with Turbotax for an hour without getting a resolution. I was told it may be not working because Turbotax doesn't support e-filing amended returns for my state. I removed my state and was still unable to e-file my 2021 1040X. Also, when you google about whether Turbotax e-files amended returns, it shows yes and if you google what states does Turbotax e-file state returns, it will list those states. Also, in the Turbotax software, when it gets to filing, there is a notice that says, "New as of August 2020! You may be eligible to electronically file your amended return. If you'd like to file electronically, click on the "File" tab above and proceed." I've done this and and then get the message that e-filing season has closed for 2022. It is treating the return as if I'm trying to file the original return and not a 1040X.

If Turbotax truly does not offer e-filing for a 1040X, why does it say it does in the software and when googling it and when talking with support staff on the phone? There is a definite disconnect somewhere.

I find it hard to believe that Turbotax doesn't, or isn't able to, offer this service. I think there is a programming glitch that is keeping it from working. I get that just because the IRS says you can e-file a 1040X, doesn't mean that you can do it through Turbotax, but when everything about Turbotax says you can, you think you'd be able to.

@jc1228 It's a mystery.  No matter what you've read on the internet, no matter what even the software says you can do, TurboTax is NOT e-filing amended returns.  Period.  You must print and mail an amended return using TurboTax.  I'm so sorry.

You can file your 2022 amended return via e-file with Turbo Tax, just not any year prior to that.
