If I start amending a previous return, and cancel it, do the changes revert? Or do the changes stay and show up on the return if I print it out?

I was 99% positive I put in the wrong answers on my 2020 tax return regarding if someone could claim me, and would they claim me on their return, so I went in to amend my return. I went in and made the change to those questions, but was running into a lot of issues trying to continue with the amendment. I decided to cancel it, but when I cancelled it and went to print out the 2020 return, it showed with those changes on it. I guess my question is, does the PDF or printout of a previous tax return change if you started amending it and then cancelled it? Or does it stay the same from the day it's filed? Because maybe I did file it correctly (if the PDF is the same as the day it was filed).

Nothing is safe with the TurboTax amendment process.

I have found if you cancel an amendment, it is not possible to start an amendment again and get the correct result.

Always print a copy of your completed tax return for your records, and review it carefully before e-Filing.
You will need it if you are audited by the IRS, or to amend if a TurboTax update changes your return or for any other reason,
SUCH AS,  you yourself decide to amend.
AND, to find your AGI next year.

If you made changes to the return, you would need to undo them. Please see How do I cancel or undo an amended return in TurboTax Online? for more information.

Thank you!

I did revert the changes and then cancelled the amendment. So I changed it back from ‘No’ to ‘Yes’ on the question ‘Can someone claim me’. Now when I go to download/print my 2020 return, it is also showing ‘No’ for that question. So am I safe to assume I filed it originally with ‘No’ as the answer, even though when I first went in to amend it, it had ‘Yes’ selected?

Darn it okay thank you!

I usually always print them out but could not find my 2020 anywhere so I must’ve forgotten. I guess my best option to find out what my original tax return had on it is to pay for it through the IRS at this point?

If you don't know what you filed, you can go to the IRS website and request a transcript.

The transcript can be used as a base to amend, just like a printout of the original 1040 can be.

there is no charge for a transcript.

I did actually try that yesterday but could not seem to find that question on the transcript 😕 But thank you so much for your help!

@Anonymous

There is no charge for a transcript.

Look for EXEMPTIONS:

1: you claimed yourself.

0:  someone can claim you.
