I realized I made a mistake on my tax return after already submitting it.

Unfortunately, since you have already filed you will need to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return.  If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes and re-submit your return.  If the IRS accepts your return, you MUST wait until it has been fully processed and you receive your refund or have paid your balance due.

The IRS may catch the error and make the correction for you.  If not, you will need to prepare an amended tax return and mail it in. Form 1040X to amend will not be finalized until February 11th. You cannot e-file an amended return.  They have to be mailed, and it takes at least a couple of months for the IRS to process an amended return. In the meanwhile, DO NOT go in and make any changes to your return. 3 weeks after you mailed your amendment, you can start tracking its progress at the IRS Where's My Amended Return? site.

Instructions to amend can be found here:  https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/3288565

If you have not paid for the online edition you are using, have not filed your tax return or registered the Free edition, then you can clear your return and start over with a lower priced edition. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the program screen while working on the 2019 online tax return. Click on Clear & Start Over.

OR -

Use the TurboTax Free File program if you are eligible - https://freefile.intuit.com/
If you are eligible you can use the TurboTax Free File Program which is free to file both a federal and state tax return. The Free File Program edition is a full featured personal tax program and on a separate website from the TurboTax online editions.

To qualify for free 2019 federal and state tax returns with the Free File Program, you'll need to meet at least one of these requirements:

  • A maximum 2019 adjusted gross income (AGI) of $36,000; or
  • You qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC); or
  • You served as active duty military (including Reservists and National Guard) with a maximum 2019 AGI of $69,000 (you'll also need a military-issued W-2).

@codywarner17 You have to first make sure your 2020 return was accepted in TurboTax Online or paper-filed through the mail

Here's an article that will give you instructions on how to amend a return.

We prepared using 1099 form info. then was suggested we change to W-2s from 1099s all income amounts changed making both Fed. and State refunds in correct, realized errors after filling. Anyone know if I just wait for IRS to discover error or what?

Yes. They will either accept it or reject it. If they reject it you can make the needed changes. If they accept it you can amend your return and make the necessary adjustments. For steps on how to amend your return please click the link below.

This is not what Turbo Tax states. They said you CAN send an amended return as long as the IRS has not found it first and have contacted you.  This is for 2020 filing.

You can only amend a filed tax return using Form 1040X after the IRS has accepted the tax return.  If the IRS has rejected the tax return then nothing has been received by the IRS so there is nothing to amend.  You fix the rejected tax return and e-file it again.

If the return is rejected you can make the necessary changes and e-file again.
If the return is accepted you will have to amend your original tax return. An amended return, Form 1040X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 16 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return.

Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.

See this TurboTax support FAQ on amending a tax return originally completed and filed using the 2020 TurboTax editions - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/amending/help/how-do-i-amend-my-return/01/27439

The IRS Form 1040-X for amending a 2020 tax return is scheduled to be available on 03/25/2021 (subject to change)

To correct the gambling income being reported, file an amended return. It can be e-filed. The state amendment can only be e-filed if you reside in Georgia, Michigan, New York, or Vermont. Otherwise, TurboTax will provide instructions to mail in the state amended return.
