I need to amend my 2020 tax return so I opened it yesterday, after TT software update, then saw a huge difference in my refund amount from my original e-file (done on May 3, 2021).
I saw few other posts regarding this topic. However, they all seemed to be the ones who filed early then later impacted by the American Rescue Plan (first $10,200 of UI not taxable).
My case is different in that I filed mine on May 3 (after the law change and Turbotax software update).
My original e-file showed Federal refund of $4600 and I owed the State $7. I still have not received the Federal refund.
Now, it says my Federal refund is $1500 and I owe the State $47.
What gives? Since I filed my return after the TT software was updated based on the American Rescue Plan, I can't think of any tax law changes that would impact my refund amount this much?!
I need to amend my return because of an omission but I'm afraid doing so will dramatically reduce my refund incorrectly?!

First look at the original return against the new one in the program ... exactly which lines changed ?
Always print a copy of your completed tax return for your records, and review it carefully before e-Filing.
You will need it if you are audited by the IRS, or to amend if a TurboTax update changes your return or for any other reason,
AND, to find your AGI next year.
If you didn't follow this rule, you can go to IRS.gov to get your 1040 transcript showing what you have on file.
I do have a PDF print of what I e-filed. I will have to compare line by line and see what changed even though I have NOT made any changes to the original return.
Let us know what changed. There maybe a FAQ for it or you may not need to amend.
Going forward ... switch OFF the auto update function to prevent this from happening in the future. Then if you need to amend you would open the return first and then update the program. Now all you can do is damage control ... you need to undo the changes the update did and then start the amendment then put the changes back.
I have not filed but I updated TurboTax and my refund went way down after I changed my donation deduction
@CheryleD It may be that there was an update to TurboTax that affected your tax, or that your refund meter did not update properly. You can view your form 1040 and compare it to last year's to see if your tax return is correctly stated as follows:
You can view your form 1040 while working in the online version of TurboTax by following these steps:
While working on your return in the Federal section of TurboTax:
1. Choose the Tax Tools icon on your left menu bar
2. Tools
3. View Tax Summary
4. Choose the Preview my 1040 on your left menu bar
The original poster already filed. You didn't.
That means you can continue to work on/revise your tax return until you are certain it is complete and accurate.
