Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

I just amended 2020 tax and 1040-X said I had a refund. But after E-file, TurboTax printed a 1040-V Payment Voucher. Should I mail in the voucher while I have refund due?

I am confused. 1040-X said I have a refund due to me, but after efile, TurboTax said "You've e-filed, but do not forget to mail in these forms" and printed out a 1040V payment voucher which indicated I should mail a payment to IRS. I am confused whether I should wait for the IRS to mail me the refund check, or should mail IRS a check for the amount stated on the 1040V payment voucher.

Go by the actual 1040X.  Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 22 should be your additional refund.  If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16.  If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.

If you have a tax due, do not send the 1040V.  Just include a check with the 1040X.  Ignore the 1040V.  That is for the original return or what the original return would have been if it didn’t need correcting.  Don’t pay the amount on the 1040V.  Pay the amount on the actual 1040X.  BUT YOU HAVE A REFUND.

Thanks VolveGirl! I think you are totally right! I had a closer look at the numbers, in my original 1040 I owed $A, and in the 1040X I was due refund $B, and the 1040V voucher told me to mail a check amount of $A-$B. I actually paid the $A I owed when I filed the original 1040, but TurboTax did not take that into consideration, and it calculated wrong, saying I still owe A-B, instead of I was due B.
