Hi @vaditya10

Try doing it this way:

Go to "Other Tax Situations", -> "Other Tax Forms", then "Prepare a report on foreign financial assets". Try to input one record, then go back to Left menu "Tax Tools -> Tools -> Delete a Form" look for 8938. You will be able to find the form this time. You of course do not need to delete any form. This is the only way to see if your data is getting saved. Then come back and start entering in remaining records.. always do a quick check if the 8938-Copy is getting created or not as you add more accounts. I have done this, and it works!

Hope this helps!

@Aaronbeh 's response noting that the "Jump to" method for form 8938 doesn't work but the "Other tax situations" method does work solved my problem. When I entered all the same information using the "Other tax situations" method that I had entered previously using the "Jump to" method my form 8938 showed up on my amended return document at the end. Thanks!

I filled form 8938 in turbotax online (and could enter all data after following the link from the help) but when I filed it did not include the form. What happended?

During 2020 I received a foreign cash gift of over $100k which was deposited into a new foreign bank account (and subsequently remitted to the USA). I have completed Form 3520 (downloaded from IRS) to report the gift and also made a FinCen 114 filing to report the bank account.

I was doing Form 8938 in TurboTax and had gathered the various required details like bank name, address, account number etc. However, after first completing f3520, I came back to TurboTax and noticed that it says for f8938 "Only include accounts that have not already been separately reported on f3520..."  . The forms screen in TurboTax also states that I do not need to include these assets in f8938 for the tax year, but just enter the number of Forms 3520 filed.

So my question is: Do I therefore NOT need to enter the bank info details for f8938 in TurboTax? Since Form 3520 only asks for the amount and date of the gift , but not the bank account details as in f8938, it seems that those details would be "missing" from the tax return (though they would be filed with FinCen).

Thanks for your help.

Thank you @Aaronbeh , this worked for me in TurboTax Online - I was previously 'jumping to' the 8938 section, too.

Cheers!

As of April 8th, 2021, this glitch is still an issue. I used aaronbeh's recommendation on page 4 of this thread.

I expanded it as follows: Do not use Search 8938, then “jump to, 8938”

INSTEAD

Go to Uncommon Tax Situations

Scroll down and click All Uncommon Situations

Then click Other Tax Forms

Then click Prepare a Report on Foreign Financial Assets and fill in as usual. In our case, because we entered no data in the interest, dividends, etc section of the form, when we did the review, it needed us to click on Part V, box 3d- No tax item reported in Part III with respect to this asset.

After entering the info for my two Foreign Accounts (the second lists out as Copy 1), and completing the section, and working our way through “skip a state”, review, etc, we were able to view the Amended Tax return in Print Center and confirm the form was created.  We efiled, however, the 1040X and 8938 could also be mailed   to:

Department of the Treasury

Internal Revenue Service

Austin, TX [social security number removed]

Note, if you find this out before you efile, and haven't paid yet to see Print Center, you can go to Tax Tools, Tools, Delete a form, and view the list of all the form names, (you just can't see the actual forms) and confirm you have a form 8938 in the list. (Don't hit the Delete button, of course 🙂

I filled form 8938 in turbotax online (and could enter all data after following the link from the help) but when I filed it did not include the form. What happended?

Hello, I am using the online version. I was finally able to get my information for Form 8938 to save after months of trying by not using the Jump to form 8938 and going through Uncommon Tax Situations.  I saw the form in the print center. Hallelujah. I continued on checking my return and then went back to the print center to look at the final return again before e-filing and form 8938 disappeared! I had to re-enter all my information again since it all disappeared and was not saved. This has happened a few times to a point I am nervous as to whether TT will file correctly. Anyone else have this problem with form 8938? How do I make sure form 8938 sticks? Very frustrated with TT this year. Thank you!

When you go to the Delete a Form section, is it gone there, too?

If not, I think that when I was speaking to one of the CPA's, she had me clear cookies to ensure I was able to see the right pdf in the Print Center.

Hi @jackpot1

Please do not use online version. I had shared this earlier - use desktop version and go through "Uncommon Tax situations" flow. It works well. I have done that. It was a total waste of time dealing with online version. This particular module is probably not that important to TurboTax product & engineering teams; that's why in spite of raising this again and again; they never addressed these issues. Hopefully someone is listening to us.

Thanks!

I need to look at form 8938. I cannot find it in my return. Hiow do I find it?

I filled form 8938 in turbotax online (and could enter all data after following the link from the help) but when I filed it did not include the form. What happended?

On the Online version, I have tried every possible option to enter the information for this form (based on suggestions on this post). However, form 8938 fails to be produced every time. This is a major issue, especially as TurboTax doesn't provide any warning that it hasn't produced the form. Failing to produce the form carries an IRS penalty of $10,000, per month. You can only spot this if you carefully double check the printed forms before e-filing. I wonder how many users think they have filed correctly and are going to get audited and penalized.

I spent time with Turbo Tax tech support (really nice person), and confirmed this is indeed a bug. The solution is to switch and restart with the Desktop version. I did that and it appears to work (I see the form in printed forms).

But now I'm worried that TurboTax may have made other mistakes that are harder to spot. This feels like a bug that should have been very easy for TurboTax to catch. What about the harder to catch bugs?
