No---and you should always wait until your original return has been fully processed before sending in an amended return. That way you can avoid the kind of confusion you caused by amending too soon. The IRS catches certain mistakes and corrects them without the need for you to amend.
Will you provide a little more information. Did you use the TT online 2021 version. Date you file the orig. return, then date for the amended 2021. Did you receive in the mail any communication from the IRS? Is so, what did they say.
I'm wondering if TT and the IRS, who relies on TT software, was able to incorporate your amended return with the original. However, it seems to me, knowing the IRS, you would have an explanation.
Only knowing what you are telling us, I would not send in the additional taxes, from the amended return. You have the documentation that the IRS or TT made the adjustment for the missing W-2. You have paid all the taxes that are do, and that should be good enough for the IRS.
Looking forward to what the TT experts have to say.

I need to file a 2021 amended return as a 1099-R arrived late.
Will TT allow for amended 2021 returned at this time?
How do you know IRS catches things like the subject of this thread?
Real experience with IRS?
Why would not the IRS provide the poster with an explanation in writing?
Things do not, as an auditor, appear proper to me.
However, as I said, I would wait for the IRS to contact me.
p.s. thanks for sharing your disclaimer, gary

The IRS does not catch every mistake---but they do catch some of them. That is why we advise people to wait until their original return has been fully processed before sending in an amended return. It causes too much confusion for user and for the IRS if you put two returns into the system at the same time. And... it is currently taking the IRS about six months to process amended returns. If you complicate matters by putting an amended return into the system while they are still working on your original return, the delay can be even longer.
The IRS will likely send the OP a letter explaining the change....but those letters are usually mailed out several weeks after the change has been made.
If you received a late 1099R, please wait for the IRS to process your first return. Those 1099R's are reported to the IRS, and the IRS might catch it---or they might not. When your first return has been processed, if you still need to amend, you can prepare a Form 1040X. A 2021 Form 1040X can be e-filed.
Yes, you are able to access and file an amended return at this time (Form 1040-X). You will want to do this before April 18th, in case you do owe tax.
Yes, the IRS will catch it but it will be much later (could be as long as two years) when the documents are reconciled with the tax return. If there is any tax due, there will be penalties and interest for late payment if you wait.
Be sure to read all the instructions carefully so that TurboTax knows the original numbers and the changed numbers for your amendment.
Thank you for the reply. Next time I will be more patient and wait for the return before I send in the 1040x... if I have too.
Brad
Thanks, Diane
Later today, I will return to TT where I flied my 2021 return, then file, using TT, the Form 1040-X.
I filed my return at the end of February; TT texted me the IRS accepts it. I received my refund. Within a week or two, at the most, my refund showed up in my checking account.
Therefore, I believe we can assume the IRS accepted my return, and my filing an amended 1040-X will be proper; I owe a few dollars on the mandatory IRA that I received in 2021 for tax year 2021.
I will read the "How to amend..." you sent in your post.
I'm very grateful to TT for the many years she has helped me with my taxes.
A big thanks to you for not only the quick response, but with your knowledge.
Diane and other TT experts.
Last night, I filed electronically my amended return ($4,000 IRA mandatory withdrawal; filed before 1099-R arrived). Original return filed, accepted, and refund received; electronically.
My wife, whose SS number is primary died last September. Social Security was notified and those monthly payments were discontinued.
For the 1040-X I followed the TT instructions and TT said OK to file electronically, with a direct withdrawal on April 18, 2022, the deadline.
Here is the Rejection email received this morning from TT.
"IND-901 - The Primary SSN in the Return Header has been locked because Social Security Administration records indicate the number belongs to a deceased individual." This is true.
Does that mean I will have to paper file the 1040-X or, preferably, I would rather file electronically. Thanks.
Forgot, in my haste.
I did visit TT to make the fix, where TT tells me the 1040-X was rejected, but the program stops right there; does not allow me to continue when the Next button. It has stopped at this:
"Rejected: Return reviewed
After fixing your errors, we'll help you file your return again.
When I hit "review again" nothing happens. Thanks
It depends. First of all, select My Info in your return and edit the information under your wife. Make sure you indicate My spouse passed away before filing this return. This is indicated in a section entitled A few things we should know. You may have done this already.
Now select File to see if you can efile. If unsuccessful, then you will need to file by mail. If you are able efile but the IRS rejects your return again, you will need to file by mail.
I am really sorry for your loss. My condolences to you and your family.
Thanks, Dave,
I did check the My Personal Information regarding the date of my wife's death; it was correct, The IRS accepted, electronically, my original return. However that was before, IMO, the Social Security Administration official notified the IRS of my wife's death. My original return did notify IRS, but that may have not setup a flag. It seems to me that if the IRS accepted the original return, the would accept the 1040-X.
I just filed, March 10 @ 9:00 pm ET electronically. I will report back.
As you advise, if it is rejected because of the Social Security notification, I will file the paper 1040-X with my check before April 18th.
A big thanks for taking the time to help me.
