Hi so here’s my issue, after filing may taxes and waiting about a week, I realized I put on the forms that I had not received my 3rd stimulus check, well as it turns out, I did happen to receive it but I had forgotten. Will the IRS automatically adjust my refund or do I need to wait for them to reject it?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
They would have rejected it right away if you did it electronically so that you can correct it but if you mailed it they make the nessary adjustment and give the reason as to why you did get what you was expecting.but if you electronically submitted it then it's going to be a minute before you get it for that reason .
If it got threw and was accepted they will catch it and the Waite for you begains it could be six months from now that's the suck part or not keep your fingers crossed.
Yes they should automatically adjust your return. It will delay your return. You don't need to amend.
I’m having the same problem and my return was accepted but it is taking longer than the usual 21 days to process the return. I’m going to call the irs and see what I can do and I’ll get back to u.
I'm having the same problem. They didn't change mine and it says accepted. But I filed on the 1st of this mon
@MegNeely91 If you mean that you also made a mistake and said you did not receive the 3rd stimulus then you cannot fix it now. But the IRS knows they paid it to you. The IRS will take it away from the refund on your tax return. That will delay your refund. You will just have to wait longer and expect a lower refund.
I just filed mine about an hour ago and made the same mistake. Can you tell me what they said to you when you called? I just want to know if I need to call them as well.
How do you know the answer to this? I'm not disagreeing with you, I just want to know if i need to do something to fix the problem. Like file and amended return or wait for it to be deducted from my return. Not worried about it taking longer. Just don't want to get in trouble for not doing anything at all.
Calling the IRS an hour after you e-filed will not help you at all. Once you e-file a tax return, you wait for it to be rejected or accepted. If it is rejected you can fix your mistakes and re-file it. If the IRS accepts it, then you have to wait out what the IRS does with it. And if you made a mistake with the 3rd stimulus, you are among many others who have made the same mistake.
The IRS is looking for mistakes with the 3rd EIP payment. They know how much they sent to you. If you messed up, they will fix it. Expect a delay and a lower refund.
Yeah, the mistake was regarding the EIP. Status is accepted as of now. Will that status change at once they catch it? I planned on calling them tomorrow, but if I don't have to, I certainly am ok with not being on hold for hours lol.
If you said you did not get the $1400 per person stimulus---it put that credit on line 30 and made your refund look bigger. Bur you cannot get it twice. If you already got the $1400 per person the IRS knows it, and they will take it off. That will reduce your refund. Do not waste your time on hold with the IRS for this.
Ok. Thank you for taking the time to respond. I'm ok with waiting longer for my return. I feel better knowing I don't need to follow up on it or file an amended return. Does this affect my state return at all?
No effect on your state return at all.
Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities, There is no rule as to which one will come first or how much time there will be between their arrivals.
STATE RETURN

Much appreciation for your responses. I shall sleep better tonight knowing the IRS will not come knocking on my door for not taking care of my careless mistake.
