I am trying to amend my 2020 tax return. I downloaded the software, but when I open it is says it needs to be updated. When I try to update I get an error. Advice?

Most likely you have a state return in the tax file you are trying to open ... so you need to :

1) download the program

2) update the program

3) start a fake return ... enter just enough fake info to get to the point where you can download the state program

4) install the state program and run updates again

5) close fake return and try opening the real return needing amending

That’s the problem: I can’t even get to the point of uploading my return. The software will not update. I get an error every time I try.

First you don't "upload" the tax file ... you open it.

Now for the update issue ... 

If you are using WIN then uninstalled OS updates can hang up the TT program updates ... install the WIN updates at least 3 times and then reboot the computer.   Then try updating the TT program making sure you are using an administrator account, the program is installed on the C drive  and that you don't have any removable drives in the USB ports.
