How to downloaded original (not amended) tax return

Before you amended, did you save the original return as a pdf?  If you did so, then it is in your online account.   If you did not do that, then the amended return overwrote the original.  You can seek a transcript of the return from the IRS or pay the IRS for a copy of the original.

  You have to access your own account and/or  print it for yourself using exactly the same account and user ID that you used when you prepared the return.

Start a 2023 return online and enter some personal information  so that the menu on the left opens up and lets you access your past year returns.

Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them.  Log out of the account you are in now.

Or did you use the desktop version of TurboTax?  If so, the files are on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive.

SAVE YOUR TAX RETURN !

EVERY year before mid-October you should save a copy of your tax return as a pdf and print a copy of it for your records.  That way you will not be searching online frantically when you need it for a lender, FAFSA forms, your next tax return, etc.

NOTE:  TurboTax and the IRS save returns for seven years.  Returns older than seven years are purged.

TurboTax Online saves only the most recent version of your tax return. It does not retain previous versions. When you amended your return, the amended version was saved and replaced the original version. If you did not save a copy of the original version on your own computer before you amended it, there is no way to get the original version from TurboTax.

A Tax Return Transcript from the IRS will have the information from your original return, but it is not in the format of the actual forms. A copy of your tax return from the IRS will be the original version. A copy of a tax return costs $43, and it takes up to 75 days to get it. On your Form 1040-X, column A contains certain figures from your original tax return. It doesn't have all the detail of the original return, but depending on why you need the original, the figures in column A of the 1040-X might meet your needs.
