I am having the exact same problem.  I have two IRAs that I took my RMDs before the change in March and decided to go on and keep the RMDs.  The Value of the IRAs is exactly the same.  In fact, I took 0% withholing on one and 15% on the other.  That way the two are different.  I submitted my tax via efile through TurboTax and the IRS rejected it becasue I submitted duplicate IRAs.  TurboTax told me to delete the duplicate which of couse I could not do because both are valid.  I reviewed the two 1099-R forms and and carefully made sure each block was correct and that the appropriate box was check to all their questions.  I resubmitted my 1040-SR again and it was just rejected.  

The only difference on the acutal 1099-R and the form for inputing the data is the box that gives the account number which has different account numbers.  Unfortunately, TurboTax does not include that box on their input form.

Has anyone figured out how to fix this issue?  I have been submitting these two IRA 1099-R forms for years without any issue.  I have been using TurboTax since 1996.

Does anyone know where the issue is located?  I got off the phone with TurboTax support.  Their recommendation:  Remove TurboTax, Reinstall TurboTax and Reenter all my information and try to resubmit.

 

I compared the 2020 return to last year.  Outside the numbers, everything is identical including the identical amounts withdrawn from 2 different IRA accounts from the same brokerage firm.

 

Need to understand if this is a TurboTax bug or an IRS bug.

I don't know the official answer but our two CPA tax preparer friends have not had any similar problems.  That tells me it's a Turbo Tax problem.  It's ridiculous this hasn't been addressed by Turbo Tax no matter whose fault it is.

I'm experiencing the same problem. Rejection due to duplicate 1099-R forms. But one is for me, and one is for my wife- identical amounts, different recipient names.

TurboTax Support was fairly useless.  Not the support person's fault.  From Googling online, the most likely answer I found is that this is an issue with how TurboTax is sending the information to IRS in not creating a unique identifier.  What a lot of people suggested is adding $0.01 to one of the "identical" value since it would be rounded to the nearest dollar value.  I check my tax return before and after adding the cent and it looks identical.

Agree that Turbotax is absolutely useless here.

 

My guess from reading a bunch of posts is that this issue is on the turbotax side.  I'm guessing this because when the returns are rejected no IRS rejection code provided.  Also, the federal and state returns get rejected at the exact same time.  I assume what happens is TT packages up the data to send to the IRS and State departments, and it is failing at this step.  Otherwise there is no way that Federal + State(s) would fail immediately at the same time.

 

Also, I'm guessing TT only provides the forms (and schedules) to the IRS.  The forms do not list the individual IRA amounts, instead they sum them up on the 1040.  TT must be doing some validation on all the TT worksheets before transmitting.

I have 2 1099Rs (IRAs) which apparently triggered this rejection. They had identical withdrawal amounts but nothing else was identical - different account numbers, different owners, etc.   After numerous other adjustments and resubmittals, I add $.01 to one of them and resubmitted.  The return was accepted within the hour.  Thanks to whomever found that fix.  But whatever screening criteria used by TurboTax and the IRS needs to be fixed.

As many of you have already concluded: This IS a TT bug! Just as "Champ" macuser_22 has repeatedly said with multiple posts over the past 3 weeks: "only rounded whole numbers, not cents, are reported to the IRS." TT should just admit it and update their software.

 

The proof of this is fairly straightforward. Like many of you I had an e-file rejected "by IRS" because of duplicate 1099R's. The two 1099R's had exactly the same dollar amount and tax withheld. I raised one by $0.14 to raise the first to the next whole dollar and decreased the 2nd by $0.14 so that the totals of all 1099R's were not altered. It was then accepted in 30 minutes.

 

Now, if you look at the printed file that you would submit to the IRS if you decided to mail it or kept for your records, you will see that the amounts on 1040 have not changed at all whether you look at the file before the $0.01 cent adjustment (if you did that ) or something different (+- $0.14) that did not change rounded amounts - like I did. The two files are identical. The file that TT sends to the IRS would NOT be any different, whichever of these methods you used because the whole number rounded values would be the same. So quit worrying about getting in trouble for sending a insignificantly altered 1099R to the IRS. You are not trying to "trick" the IRS! You ARE tricking TT's faulty software to submit the same legitimate and accurate file to the IRS.

Thank you so much for the solution. I had the same problem, increased one by $1 and decreased the other by $1, the total on the 1040 form and my refunds stayed the same, and the return was accepted within the hour of refiling. 

 

This should not affect chances of being audited since it does not change the information the IRS sees, it's like changing an Excel  worksheet you use for internal calculations.

 

Again, thanks for the suggested solution. Hope TurboTax fixes their problem.

So, I am having a similar problem but it appears to be with 1099-Gs, not 1099-Rs.  I can't find anyone else reporting they are having this issue with the Gs, and in that form I can't change by .01, only by whole dollars.  The first time I was rejected TT said it was due to duplicate W-2s but there weren't any duplicates and my two W-2s were from different employers and for different amounts.  I resubmitted without changes and this time it came back saying it was rejecting it due to duplicate 1099-Gs.  My husband and I do each have 1099-Gs from the state for the same amounts.   I tried to add .01 but it immediately deletes it.  I can try the add a dollar to one and subtract from the other, but worried that will be more problematic with the IRS matching up the 1099s?

However, my issue is with being rejected for duplicate 1099-G not 1099-R.  My husband and I have 1099-Gs with the same amounts from the state.

An IRA includes all investments under one IRA plan or account. File only one Form 1099-R for distributions from all investments under one plan that are paid in 1 year to one recipient, unless you must enter different codes in box 7. You do not have to file a separate Form 1099-R for each distribution under the plan.

I have distributions from 2 funds from the same Mutual Funds.  I will let you know if the IRS accepts the return.  I have never had this issue in prior years.

Same problem with W2's. My wife and I have worked a temporary event job every year for the past 5 yrs. All W2 amounts are the same, but one W2 with her name/SSN and another W2 with my name/SSN. Never a problem until this year. So we now know the problem happens with 1099-R, 1099-G and W2.  Might be our last year with TurboTax. Very disappoiting
