When using the amended tax return function in desktop 2022 TurboTax, the calculated Total Payments/Credits Amount is the same as the Total Tax Correct Amount. This is an error and consequently brings up my full credit amount as my federal refund - which is too high. I amended my return to add an overlooked Residential Energy Credit. Even the TurboTax helpline couldn't help with this one. I'm pretty sure there is a software error. I'll do my 1040-X by hand.

I'm not quite sure what's happened here, but I'll state how it is supposed to work.

Thank you for your reply. When I used the "amend" function on my tax return the amount owed/refund never returned to zero. But anyway, I found the problem. I printed and compared the proposed amended return with my original return. What I found was the amended process assumed that I had already paid my taxes owed as calculated in my original return. When I produced my original return I elected to electronically file the return but to wait until a later date to pay my additional taxes owed. In the amended return routine I was never asked if I already paid, only if I already filed - small but important distinction. To correct this omission I opened the forms view, found the 1040-X form and the line reporting the taxes owed as paid, deleted that entry and voila! That correction cured both the federal and state returns. The amended return now showed a correct refund for both the federal and state returns after the inclusion of my federal energy credit.
