We forgot to add in our health insurance info so the IRS mailed us a form to fill out, we added said info, followed the directions, and sent it back in. I was just guessing that fell under amended returns?
I'm wondering if anyone that's had this problem finally received their refund from the amended return. I'm happy to wait if everything is ok. I just don't really want to sit on hold waiting for the IRS.
Thank you!
Mailed in the 8962 amended form June 23. When I check the status, it says they have not received it. Is this because of the backup from Covid, or do I nee to find out where my personal information has gone? They originally said 8-10 weeks. Just concerned because it is personal information.

The IRS does not acknowledge the receipt of an 8962. It usually takes about 2-3 months to process but with the COVID-19 backlog might take 6 months this year.
@ss6055
We're all in the same boat, and all we can do is wait patiently. Personally, I don't expect it be processed or even an update until October/November. It's truly unprecedented what the IRS is going through. Offices were closed, flood of returns from the new tax filing date (July 15th), AND responsible for distributing stimulus checks (a huge unscheduled project). I most certainly do not envy the IRS's situation right now.
They sure do withdraw my estimated tax payments quickly though! Literally the next day! 🙂
Did it ever show up? I have been waiting since March too
yea my amended return still hasnt even showed up, and i mailed it to them back on April 11. I need the amended return so that i can qualify for the stimulus check..
The IRS has not been working on mailed returns until very recently---and an amended return can only be filed by mailing it in. Under normal circumstances you would be able to see something about your mailed in Form 1040X after about three weeks, but that is not the case right now. The usual 4 months for processing an amended return is going to take longer. Sorry.

MAILED RETURNS
Per the IRS website IRS Operations During COVID-19: Mission-critical functions continue:
IRS operational status and alternatives
Processing Delays for Paper Tax Returns: Taxpayers should file electronically through their tax preparer, tax software provider, or IRS Free File.
We’re experiencing delays in processing paper tax returns due to limited staffing. If you already filed a paper return, we will process it in the order we received it.
Do not file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.
If you mail a tax return (or a payment) to the IRS, it is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it like UPS or certified mail so you will know it was received.
TurboTax will not know anything about your amended return, and nor will TT know that you put your 1040X in an envelope and took it to a mailbox. TurboTax does not get updates on mailed (or e-filed) returns.
When the IRS finally opens its mail and begins to process mailed returns you can check the status on the IRS site.

*********UPDATE*******
I mailed in my amended return the end of Feb/beginning of March. I did have it set for direct deposit BUT I received a check in the mail finally yesterday! Aug 27
So if you mailed yours in around that time be looking in the mail for a check
Hope this helps!
FYI - They only mail checks for refunds. No Direct Deposit.
See 1040X instructions page 19 for line 22 middle of first column
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040x.pdf
It says.....You will receive a check for any refund due to you. A refund on an amended return can’t be deposited directly to your bank account.
That must have changed because last year it was direct deposited.
Nope. Amended returns have been that way for a long time, probably always. Maybe it was for the original return refund or Stimulus Check or state refund.
@Kuykertoo Thanks for the update!
Goodness Gracious. So if you did priority mail and it says delivered the 24th of August. It's 6 weeks from that date?
In normal times it takes up to 16 weeks or more to process an Amended 1040X return. But these are not normal times.
Sorry the IRS has limited staff due to Covid-19. They just started opening the mail in June that's been stacking up. Back in March the IRS closed their processing centers and stopped processing mailed tax returns. An IRS spokesperson recently said that they have about 11 million pieces of unopened mail. The IRS says....."We’re experiencing delays in processing paper tax returns due to limited staffing. If you already filed a paper return, we will process it in the order we received it." So it may take longer if you mailed in June or later. So you have to keep waiting.
See this IRS page for the latest information

Then once they start opening the mail, After 3 weeks you can track it here,
