Before I understood the rules governing the distribution of the COVID stimulus payment(s) I (as parent) filed our return claiming our younger son as a dependent. He filed his return indicating he could be claimed as a dependent on someone else's return (ours). I believe this prevents our son from receiving the stimulus check payment(s).
If I amend our return to remove our son as a dependent so he will be eligible for the stimulus will that be sufficient to reclassify my son and cause the stimulus payment to be transferred? (Yes, I know this will increase my taxes - but he would love the extra cash!). Do I also have to amend his return to remove the "can be claimed as a dependent" box? (I did run "Amend a filed return" TurboTax (desktop) but couldn't find this setting to clear.)
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks,
Bill

Your son is not eligible for stimulus payments, whether or not you claim him as a dependent. Someone who CAN be claimed as a dependent is not eligible for stimulus payments. It doesn't matter whether you actually claim him or not.
And you cannot amend his tax return to uncheck the "can be claimed" box because he CAN be claimed, even if you don't actually claim him.
Thanks for the quick response. Your explanation makes perfect sense.
