Since 2017, I am using Turbotax (CD for windows) to file my taxes. I filed 2019 taxes using Turbotax where I claimed my brother who is on F-1 student VISA as dependent. I just came to know that he can not be claimed as resident alien which means that I cannot claim him as a dependent. I need to amend my 2019 tax return removing him as a dependent. I could open my 2019 tax file in Turbotax and see an option to amend the return. Can I proceed with it and will it give me an option to print the amended form so that I can send it to IRS? I do not want to manually fill form 1040-X.

You can't claim a person as a dependent unless that person is a U.S. citizen, U.S. resident alien, U.S. national, or a resident of Canada or Mexico. If your brother does not qualify then you can file an amended return to remove him as your dependent. You can do so with TurboTax Desktop, and Yes, you will be able to print the amended return. How do I amend my 2019 return in the TurboTax CD/Download software?
Thanks @DavidD66 .
My brother came to the US July 2019 on F-1 student VISA. He too filed his 2019 tax return using Turbotax form 1040 as a resident alien. Now as we know that he is a non-resident alien for tax purpose, can he directly file amendment for 2019 tax return using Sprintax (also correcting that he is NOT claimed as a dependent after I file my 2019 tax return amendment removing him as a dependent)? He did not use sprintax last year. Anything else need to be done in this scenario?
Yes, he can file an amended return using Sprintax as a nonresident alien.
However, if your brother has a Permanent Resident Card (green card) or meets the substantial presence test, then he would not be a nonresident alien. To verify his status, see: Determining Alien Tax Status.
See: Can I file a 1040 or do I have to file a 1040-NR?
Please visit the TurboTax/Sprintax site for more info.
Thanks @KathrynG3.
My brother does not have a green card. He’s on F1 student VISA. Though he meets the substantial presence test, we came to know that F1 VISA candidates are considered as non-residents for 5 years. Hence was the confusion.
One of the requirements to claim a dependent is he/she must be a US citizen or a resident alien. You needed to amend all the tax years you claimed your brother as dependent. The amended income tax return must be mailed to the IRS for processing.
See, how to amend a return you already filed, link.
