When will Turbotax online be updated to amend 2020 tax return? The 1040 form is already available on the IRS site, but not on Turbotax online. I need to correct errors that does not involve unemployment. I I keep receiving the message
Don't worry if your refund meter drops to 0; this is normal. Your calculations will come out correctly in the end.
Finish and file your amendment according to the instructions. You can e-file your 2020 amended federal tax return, but most states require amendments to be printed and filed by mail.
If e-filing, you’ll review and transmit your federal return. If not, we'll give you instructions to print and mail your amended return.
3 weeks after mailing your amended federal return, you can start tracking it at the IRS Where's My Amended Return? site.
Allow at least 16 weeks for the IRS to process your amended return.
Thank you for your assistance, but I am still receiving the same message. I even used two different browsers and continue to receive this message,
"Your return isn't ready to be amended yet. The IRS is making some updates that change how we support amended returns that include unemployment. We'll be updating our product after we have IRS guidance on the best way to file amended returns so they can be processed quickly and accurately."
Unfortunately, your return will not be able to be amended until the program until the program is fully ready to handle all issues that might arise with the amend. Even though your amend is for other issues, TurboTax will prevent you from amending while the program is being worked on.
TurboTax is still waiting on some guidance from the IRS and from some states so that all issues will be resolved before any new amends are created.
IRS actually told us not to file an amendment return just for the unemployment exemption of $10,200 (see this post on the IRS website: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-to-recalculate-taxes-on-unemployment-benefits-refunds-to-start-in-m... Instead, IRS will automatically recalculate your tax and refund your overpaid amount starting in May 2021. If you need to file an amended return for the reason(s) more than just to claim the refund on the $10,200 unemployment exemption, then you will have to wait until further update of the software by TurboTax under the new guideline of IRS.
Thank you so much for the clarification!
Hi Mary
i need to amend my 2020 before the deadline this year to reflect the change of filing status from MFJ to MFS
if TT keeps waiting for the updated IRS forms
(by the way the IRS allows to use the current Form 1040-X for 2020, by just marking 2020 as year for the amended return), I may run out of time since there is the possibility that TT cannot revise the software for amended returns before May 17, 2021
The May 17 filing deadline is for initial filing only. You can amend a filed return any time without meeting any deadlines. In fact, you can amend a 2017 return using the IRS Form 1040-X now, or later.

Here is an article on the amend issue
@hosituandung
Yes I already did all that but the turbo tax won’t let me amend it says that IRS is working on a new form for 1099G. How long will that take?
We do not have an estimated date yet, however if you sign up for the updates you will be notified of the status and will be notified when the amended form will be released.
Amended in 2020 (Mac Software) became an issue.
1. Turbotax updated Fed and some states for 1040-X - I thought that was final so did e-file Fed and NY but NJ wasn't eligible for amending. Also 1040-X dropped bank account as did NY's amended return.
2. Got another update and this was for other states catching up on amendments so now NJ is eligible for e-filing as amendment but then Fed and NY #s changed as well.
I don't like the idea of transmitting multiple 1040-Xs and would have rather had TurboTax tell us what updates gave us after we apply them (e.g., Federal and these states can amend but not those states) and I would have waited.
Hi Irene,
The IRS actually allows the use of Form 1040-X to amend 2020 tax returns, by typing in the year 2020, instead of checking the boxes designated for other years (2019, 2018, etc.) but TT still has not allowed efiling of amended 2020 returns.
Since I need to amend the return and change my filing status from MFJ to MFS, I am required to submit the federal amended 2020 return before May 17, 2021. I believe I will have no choice but manually submit (i.e. by mail) the federal amended return, unless TT updates the tax software in the next couple of weeks. Would you have any other recommendation?
Thanks,
HSTD
Why is there no option to Amend the Return on 2020 Turbo Tax software for Mac? I need to file an amended return and when I open up the software I do not have this option anywhere.
