2020 amended return

I am ready to print my amended 2020 return.  I think I have to mail it in.  Is that correct?   Also, I already paid for Audit Defense when I filed the original return and now it wants me to pay again. What can I do?

No, you do not have to mail your 2020 Form 1040-X, Amended Tax Return. Just follow these instructions.

For years prior to 2020, you'll need to print and mail your amended return.

2020 amended return

I get this when I'm in TurboTax 2020 and trying to efile the amended return:

E-filing is Closed for the Season, You Can File by Mail
You can still file this return, but you'll need to walk through printing and filing by mail.
TurboTax e-filing closed for the tax season on October 15, 2021. Learn More

@Barbara471  We regret to inform you that the Help Article referred to in the prior post contained information that was only valid last calendar year.  Since we are now in the 2021 tax filing season, TurboTax is no longer capable of e-filing a 2020 amended (or initial) return.  We do apologize for the confusing messaging that suggested otherwise.

DavidD66, thank you for responding quickly, and DanielV01 thank you for correcting that response.  But I don't think I can handle this.  I've used TurboTax for years and years and years and have not had problems, but with all the changes of this year in tax law and in TurboTax plus the fact that there seems to be just no way to find a person to ask things like that to and get a correct answer easily, I have given up and asked for a refund.  DanielV01, if you think I'm missing a line of communication, please let me know.  As of right now I'm trying another product that's considerably less money.  I would like to have been able to find out if I could switch from TurboTax download (with a refund) to TurboTax online (not for full services but for the live chat), but I couldn't seem to make that happen.  I spoke with someone on the phone for 30 minutes this morning and then was being transferred and got disconnected.  I've never had an experience like this year's experience with TurboTax.

@Barbara471  I can appreciate that when you have an experience different than anticipated it can be frustrating, and we certainly want to do all we can to assist you.  Your specific question dealing with amended return is still a new provision from the IRS, and the information we had on hand to answer your initial question was accurate from the IRS' standpoint, but not accurate from what the TurboTax program is capable of doing.  Needless to say, we have made corrections to that information, and we know that the information provided inconvenienced you.

Refund questions must be directed to our phone customer service.  In this public forum we cannot administer refunds.  And while normally it is not possible to switch from Desktop Software to one of our online offerings without paying a separate fee, you can certainly call customer service again and see if they can work with you under your set of circumstances.  I can't promise a specific resolution, but I do know we are very interested in providing the highest level of customer satisfaction.
