1040 1040X

Immediately after completely our 1040 & e-filing, we realized that we forgot to input one of our forms 1099R & as well as entered wrong property year taxes paid. So we filed a 1040X, we printed and mailed to IRS with forms & payment due. We have since received direct deposit of refund based off the 1040. What do we do now? What about returning the direct deposit back? Please call me at [phone number removed] ASAP!

You always get the first refund.  In fact you should not even do the amended return until the first return fully processes and you get the refund.  The Amended return should only be for the difference you get back  or owe.  Did the 1040X have a tax due?  Ignore the payment voucher that prints out with the 1040X.   If you have a tax due just include a check when you mail the 1040X. The voucher is for what your original 1040 return would have been if you had done it right including these changes.

You can confirm this by printing your amendment and looking at the 1040X. Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 21 should be your additional refund. If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16. If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.

Agreed ... look at the 1040X ... was the refund you got the same as the amount on line 18?  If it is there is nothing you need to do.

Column A should have the figures from the original return, Column C the corrected figures and Column B the differences between the other 2 which needs an explanation on page 2 of the form 1040X.

If you completed it correctly you will see an entry on either line 16 OR 18:

On line 16 should be the amount you paid with your original return.

On line 18 should be the amount of your original refund you received.

Then you will see your extra refund on line 22 OR  the new balance due you need to pay on line 20.
