Paid taxes to wrong state (resedent)

Hi, in 2018 I relocated from NY to NJ. 2 days prior relocation I sold stocks. While filling the tax return for 2018 I "assigned" the stocks capital gain to NJ, and paid taxes to NJ. Looks it was a mistake, as two days back I received the "statement of proposed audit changes" from NY, which mentions that I must pay the stocks capital gain to NY State and NY City. It is about 4k.

I realize my mistake - I sold stocks Before relocation, so I supposed to pay taxes to NY,NYC and not to NJ. And I will, but how to return taxes I paid to NJ?

You'll need to amend your 2019 NJ state income tax return to get a refund for the amount you overpaid on the sale of your stock.

Thanks team,

Just one additional question - I remember while starting working on my 2020 taxes  TurboTax asked me if I want to amend 2019 taxes, and I said "no" because in 2019 everything was fine. But what about my 2018 taxes which I want to ament, can I somehow file it together with 2020 taxes, or it should be completelly separate process?

@pk1 Yes, they are a completely separate process. You will need to amend your 2018 tax return and separately file your 2020 tax return.

Thanks a lot, last question. I just completed the amendment, and it has a set of documents for Federals and for State(NJ). There is no change in terms of Federal taxes, and they owe me 0. And NJ owes me about 1k.

Do I have to mail both Federal and NJ amendment? Or only NJ is enough? I didn't change anything on Federal taxes level, I only change the assignment of capital gains on state level, so I guess I don't need to send Federal amendment, but want to confirm

You only need to file the state amended return since the federal did not change.
