My NJ State Return has been "processing" . I just called and was told because they need proof of income etc. copy of W2 . why does turbo tax not inform you about this?

My return has been processing for almost a year now... I just called today and was informed that since I efile, I need to submit proof of income such as w2, 1099 etc. before they process my refund.? Am i doing something wrong on turbo tax? Every state taxreturn / refund is in processing still all the way from 2018-currently. i dont understand?

TurboTax gets no information from your state after you file your tax return, so no one at TT knows if your refund was issued by the state.   TurboTax does not know that the state wants a copy of your W-2.   If the state wants a copy of your W-2 then you need to provide it to them.

When you entered your income into the TurboTax federal software, the income information flowed to the state return.  But the state has the right to put your return under review, request additional information from you, verify your identity, etc.   Once you file your returns you have to track the refunds yourself.

Did you save copies of your W-2's?   If you did not save them (which you are supposed to do) then here is information about  getting copies:

 W-2's come from employers.  There is not a federal or national website that provides W-2’s.  

TurboTax does not have a copy of your W-2—the Wage & Tax Statement—issued to you by your employer, (nor does TurboTax have copies of your 1099’s).   You should always save those documents for your own records. You could ask the employer(s) for copies or you can get a copy from Social Security (for a fee of $62).

If you saved a pdf of your completed tax return, the worksheets will show the W-2 information you entered, but not the actual W-2.

You can get a wage and income transcript from the IRS:  It will not show the actual W-2, 1099’s, etc, but will show the income information the IRS received.  It will not, however, show your state information. It will only show the federal information.
