Letter 6470

Hello!

I got Letter 6470 stating that IRS changes the RRC on my 2020 taxes due to adjusting my income which exceeds a certain amount. I’ve never changed my income nor do I make the minimum amount to exceed it. It states that my one of my qualifying dependent exceeds the age limit but I don’t have kids and I filers this when I was single. What should I do? Who can I contact because I am confused and wouldn’t know how to address this issue.

That is just one of the list of generic reasons they give if they changed the Recovery rebate credit on line 30.  How much is on 1040 line 30?

Do you have an amount on 1040 line 30 for the Recovery rebate credit?   Did you not get one of the first 2 Stimulus payments?   Or qualify for more?  Line 30 is only if you qualify for more or missed getting one.

If you claimed a missing stimulus payment on your return but the IRS took it off you have to ask the IRS. They think they already sent it to you. Did you get the 2nd round after you filed your return?   Maybe it went to an account you don't remember. Or you got a check or a card. It was probably easy to miss the debit card in the mail and think it was junk mail. They have to put a trace on it.

How to put a trace on a missing 1st or 2nd Stimulus payment.  IRS for Payment Issued but Lost, Stolen, Destroyed or Not Received

See question F3 here, you can expand it to see how to put a trace on it.

Thank you so much for replying.

Line 30 it says 200.  I did get my 2 stimulus check. Directly into my checking account.

could there be another error?

If you got the full first 2 checks you shouldn't have an amount on line 30.  You tried to claim it again do the IRS took it off.   $200 is a strange amount for line 30.

That notice was just to tell you they corrected the RRC on line 30 and adjusted the refund.  If you agree with the changes you can ignore the notice.

Hi!  I got this letter.  It was sent on 9/21.  They adjusted my gross income above the limit to receive the stimulus. However, I filed married and jointly which puts my income well below the stimulus cut-off.  What do I do to correct this?  Thanks!

The letter from the IRS probably is stating that you indicated on our 2020 federal tax return that you did NOT receive a stimulus payment and therefor the amount that you did not receive was entered on the Form 1040 Line 30 as a Recovery Rebate Credit.

However, the IRS removed the credit from your tax return because the IRS shows that the stimulus payment was sent to you.  By removing the credit this reduces your federal tax refund or increases the taxes owed.

Go to the IRS website for your tax account to see what the IRS has sent to you for stimulus payments - https://www.irs.gov/payments/view-your-tax-account

If you never received the stimulus payment shown on your account then have the IRS put a trace on the payment.  Go to this IRS website for how to start a trace - https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/questions-and-answers-about-the-first-economic-impact-payment-topic-f-p...
