If the letter is from the IRS it's fake because the IRS does not send letters or anything else for non-filing of state returns. if it's from the state it could be legit. you can go to the state's webpage and find a number to call to check. The other option is to check the filing status in Turbotax
Sign in to your TurboTax account and open Your tax returns & documents on the Tax Home screen. Your state return for 2021 should be listed as Filed, and your Return Status should say Accepted. If it says Started instead, your state return was never filed. if it's complete you can print it out, assuming all fees have been paid, and mail it in. following the basic Turbotax instructions for attachments and the instructions in the letter for filing.
if it's not complete, you'll need the desktop app to finish the state and file. If you have paid all your fees, try contacting support to see if they'll push a free desktop version. Otherwise, you'll need to purchase and download that year'sTurboTax software for PC or Mac, as TurboTax Online and the mobile app are only available for the current tax year.
Take a closer look at the letter and see who really sent it. The IRS is only concerned with federal tax returns; the IRS would never send you a letter about owing state tax due. So if the letter says it is from the IRS and is about owing money to your state, it is a scam. Only your state would send you a letter saying you owe money to the state.
If the letter is in fact from your state----does it say you did not file a 2021 tax return or does it say you did not pay your tax due for 2021? Your only proof that you paid your state tax for 2021 would be your own bank or credit card record.
If you are not sure if the letter is legitimate---contact your state.
And to find your 2021 return:
You have to access your own account and/or print it for yourself using exactly the same account and user ID that you used when you prepared the return.
Start a 2024 return online and enter some personal information so that the menu on the left opens up and lets you access your past year returns.
Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them. Log out of the account you are in now.

SAVE YOUR TAX RETURNS !
EVERY year before mid-October you should save a copy of your tax return as a pdf and print a copy of it for your records. That way you will not be searching online frantically when you need it for a lender, FAFSA forms, your next tax return, etc.

NOTE: TurboTax and the IRS save returns for seven years. Returns older than seven years are purged.
