All you can do is wait until they finally get around to processing it ... this year it could take 6 month or longer due to the staffing shortage at the IRS.
It has been 16 weeks now it states it’s not being processed and to call it’s number with an extension has anyone ever seen that message and what it could mean?
I called the Irs and was able to get information on my amended return and the representative told me my amended return was filed over 20 weeks ago and he's leaving a note for the amended department team and if I don't hear anything for 30 days since the day I called him I need to call him back. It's been 3 weeks . Am I truly going to get anything at all back?
Don't know what you amended for so I cannot say for sure ... eventually they will process the return and come to some kind of conclusion. So you will either get the refund check in the mail or a letter.
Mine has been over 16 weeks. I called the number and the extension 623 and after I enter all my information it proceeds to tell me that they can't take my call at this time. So I have never been able to talk to a live person
Amended returns have been taking 6 months or longer to process lately.
I had to amend 2 years. 21 and 22. I mailed them October 18th certified mail they were received 10/23. I got my 21 refund 12/30. It's March and I'm STILL waiting on 22. The report says both 21 and 22 were received on the SAME date and sent for processing on the SAME date, yet I got 21 end of Dec ... nothing has been updated on 22 to this date. I asked my CPA if I should just resend it she said no, you don't resend amended returns you have to call them. That is a joke! I literally went in circles for THREE hours 2 weeks ago just trying to contact a human. It kept telling my information was incorrect and it wouldn't patch me through to a human no matter how many times I kept requesting it. I had to GOOGLE how to get a hold of a human on the phone with the IRS who was clearly working from home because I could hear kids laughing and playing in the background. I finally got through only to be told I have to go by the date on the report it showed it was recieved and processed so I had 4 more weeks to go. This is week 15. Next week is 16 then I get the to start the fun all over again of trying to get in contact with an actual human with the IRS to figure out what to do now. I have dire repairs I need done on my truck and I can't do it until this refund comes through!
@lonestargroomer All of that sounds very frustrating but not sure why you are posting here about it. TurboTax cannot do anything to speed up the IRS for you. It often takes longer than four months for the IRS to process an amended return. What you have not mentioned is whether you mailed those two amended returns in the same envelope. If you did, it is *possible* that the person who opened the mail did not notice one of them.
You can watch for information here:
https://www.irs.gov/Filing/Individuals/Amended-Returns-(Form-1040-X)/Wheres-My-Amended-Return-1
Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday
When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions."
- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything.
- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.
Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.
Then press 3 for all other inquiries
It should then transfer you to an agent.
I posted to so others that are going through the same thing know what to do and to be prepared for frustration on trying to get through to even talk to a human on the issue. Not much out there on what to do or what happens if 16 weeks has gone by and still no refund or word from the IRS on a return or amended return.
I did mail them in seperate envelopes, certified mail.
My CPA has offered to call them for me with me on a conference call to get through to them next week. I mean, if it's not been completed by now, 99% chance it's not going to be next week either.
Have you tried to pull your account transcripts to see if there are any codes showing the amended returns have been received? You can pull your account transcripts using the link below:
Yes, it just says received and sent for processing 11/25/24
