Once the original return has been fully processed and you have the original refund in hand or have paid the original balance due then you can amend the return ... How to amend (change or correct) a return you've already filed

First make a complete paper copy of the return you filed for your records, if you did not already do that.

TurboTax supports the amendment of your tax return.

If you e-Filed 1040, you can e-File 1040-X.

I would also save an electronic copy of your original filing in a separate file before you start to amend..
