If I have already filed and paid my taxes due but I now need to amend the return which will result in a small difference. How will this work? for the overpayment?

I paid the amount due and the check is cashed, after amending I will owe "less" but that has already been paid, which will result in a small refund.  Does the IRS send payments like that even after tax is paid?

When amending the tax return and it shows that you have a tax refund based on the information entered on the amended return, the IRS will send you a check in the mail for the refund.  All you are doing with the amended tax return is correcting the original return to what should have been filed, decreasing the taxes owed.
