I received a 4883C letter in the mail. Have been a victim of ID theft in the past. What questions does the IRS exactly ask?

I received a 4883C letter in the mail. I mailed my 1040 tax return a month ago. I have been a victim of ID theft in the past. What questions does the IRS asked when Call the phone #? Because I worried if someone stole my identity and filed a 1040 already before I mailed mine. When the IRS asks to confirm my identity and if I filed a return and I say yes? How do I know if I am confirming my 1040 and not a fraudulent 1040 already filed by someone else? What questions does the IRS exactly ask?

See this IRS website for a 4883C letter - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/understanding-your-4883c-letter

Do you happen to know exactly what questions their going to asked because I don't know if I am confirming my 1040 and not a fraudulent 1040 already filed by someone else?

They will confirm amounts from the forms they tell you to have on hand ... it is an open book test and there is nothing you cannot answer if you have the forms listed on hand ... they want the return YOU filed ... how could you possibly know what someone else filed ?

Have the following available when you call:

  • The 4883C letter
  • The income tax return referenced in the letter (Form 1040, 1040A, 1040-EZ, 1040-PR, 1040-NR, etc.). Note: A Form W-2 or Form 1099 is not a tax return.
  • A previous year’s income tax return, other than the year in the letter (Form 1040, 1040A, 1040-EZ, 1040-PR, 1040-NR, etc.). Note: A Form W-2 or Form 1099 is not a tax return.
  • Supporting documents that you filed with each year’s income tax return (Form W-2 or Form 1099, Schedules C or F, etc.).
