Look at the completed Form 1040-X carefully.
- Column A. This column shows the numbers previously reported on your tax return.
- Column B. This column shows how the amounts from your original return need to increase or decrease.
- Column C. This column shows the correct amount (Column A plus Column B).
Line 17 should show the total payments you have made for the tax year you are amending.
Line 20 shows the additional tax you owe now, if the total corrected tax is more than the payments in Line 17.
See here for the IRS Form 1040-X and instructions.
You can preview your amended return before filing to review the forms that TurboTax has prepared and to find out how your taxes were calculated. See here for details.
The IRS will calculate any interest and penalty due on the additional tax and send a bill. Interest is calculated from the due date of the original tax return.
