Once your return is filed and "Accepted", you can't make changes. If the return is Rejected, you can correct the error by deleting that child as a dependent and re-entering his/her information in the Personal Info interview.
The birthdate of dependent children is used to determine eligibility for certain exemptions and credits (e.g. a child must be age 12 (or younger) to qualify for the Child Care Credit).
Unless the error was big enough to create a problem with an exemption or a credit, it won't affect your return. Birthdates are not used for purposes of identification on e-filed or paper-filed returns.
I put my daughter's birthdate as mine, 1988 and she is 2009. 😭 The IRS needed me to verify and it may have asked me her birthdate but life has been crazy and I may have been on autopilot. I had to put in my AGI and stuff. I verified it on the IRS account website. But then I realized her birthdate was wrong when I was looking at my tax return. Well, on WMR it says my return was accepted. What do I do now? Thanks in advance!
@sward0402 The date of birth is not entered on a tax return. The Social Security number entered is the determinate factor for the date of birth. The IRS receives DOB information from the Social Security Administration. So as long as you entered the correct name and SS number your mistake with the DOB is not an issue.
@sward0402 What tax year are you asking about? You cannot have just fe-filed a 2024 return---e-filing is not even open yet and the IRS is not accepting e-files until late January. Are you asking about a 2023 return? If it shows that the IRS is processing your return you will just have to wait now to see what they do. If they have questions they will send you a letter.
