I accidentally filed my taxes twice what do I need to do about this?

I am an international student and I accidently filed twice. I filed 1040  with Turbo tax and I filed everything with EZ1040. They both accepted. What should I do?

I accidentally filed my taxes twice what do I need to do about this?

Okay I filed twice, stupid but I missed a credit and it was a significant change to my return. I filed on the same day and the correct one was accepted. My taxslayer was accepted and my turbotax was rejected. It has been 2 weeks and it has not moved to the approved tab on the status bar.

My question is, because I filed twice with the same social.... even though one was rejected. Will they IRS flag this as identity theft or do I need to report that in order for them to not process the return - I do not want this, obviously it wasn't identity theft, but will they push it to that department automatically so that my return will not be approved until they investigate?

Or will the return that was accepted, be pushed through? Usually, my return gets approved quick so I am concerned that they flagged it and won't approve it within the 21 days but rather I will have to go through the identity verification or whatever that process is. I have read a lot of different things, one being that the return that was rejected, will not get sent at all to the IRS, and the accepted one will be okay. But I also read alot about identity theft and I am wondering if they flagged me automatically bc the same social. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks, Julie

You did NOT file twice ... the second filing was REJECTED so it was never filed and there is nothing to "flag" ... some returns are simply taking longer to process this year and your situation is common.   Just be patient.

I accidentally filed my taxes twice what do I need to do about this?

Hey thanks for the reply.

One more question. This was my year to claim my daughter... obviously the stimulus went out prior to my 2020 taxes so they went off my 2019 so I did not get the stimulus for my her.

Is this something the IRS will deal with down the road or is it just what is is? Seems like this would be tough to track or take a lot of time. I just am wondering if I will get it in the future or no go. Thanks!

You can claim the first 2 round Stimulus payments on your 2020 return.  If you are claiming her on 2020 it should have been added to 1040 line 30.   Did you enter the amounts you did get into the 2 boxes?  Then if you qualified for more it should be on line 30.

Okay so I entered 1200 in box 1 and 600 in box two.

On line 30 it shows 1100 - so is this for the third stimulus (2020)

in 2019 she was a qualifying child but not claimed as a dependent.  Thank you!

No.  The 1,100 on line 30 is the 1st and 2nd Stimulus payments for your daughter.  500+600.  You are good.  The 3rd Stimulus payment comes separate and is not on your 2020 return.

Okay great. I got my 3rd payment for myself already the 1400 on March 17th. So you think I will get the stimulus payment for her later? Or on next years taxes? You are amazing thanks for helping

Did you do this? -

You complete your tax return by finishing all 3 Steps in the File section. In Step 3, to e-file your tax return, you must click on the large Orange button labeled "Transmit my returns now".

After completing the File section and e-filing your tax return you will receive two emails from TurboTax. The first email when your tax return was transmitted and the second email when the tax return has either been accepted or rejected.

@Cll35 Did you file an original return and then file another return that included the 1099? If so, the second return will be rejected.

You will need to amend your original return to include the 1099. Sending this to the IRS without an amended return will result in it getting shredded or lost.

  1. Log into Turbo Tax assuming you use Turbo Tax online
  2. When you reach the landing page, scroll to the bottom where your tax returns and documents are.
  3. Select 2020, and click on the option to amend and change return.
  4. Answer the questions about why you are amending
  5. Once you begin working in your return, your refund monitor will reset to 0.
  6. Once in your return, go to federal>wages and income.
  7. Since there are more than one type of1099, you will need to browse the various income categories to see which one is applicable to your 1099 that you need to report.
