HSA distributions

If I had a HSA with my previous employer and now I have a new HSA with my new employer, do I still report my distributions from my previous HSA?

HSA distributions

Yes, the HSA distributions from your previous HSA should be reported. HSA distributions are taxable by year, not by employer. So, you should report any distributions you took in 2024, and indicate whether or not you spent the money on medical expenses. ‌If you did, the distributions aren't taxable.

You will find the amount that you took as a distribution on Form 1099-SA sent to you from your HSA. ‌You may have more than one 1099-SA if you took a distribution from your new job as well. You can enter them both.

What if I realized when preparing my 2024 taxes that I didn't report my HSA distributions on my 2023 return?

Then you should amend your 2023 return to include the Form 1099-SA.  The distribution information will then be reported on Form 8889.

If the money was spent for qualified medical expenses, then there will be no change in your return's bottom line.  However, at some point the IRS may match income documents and notice that the Form 1099-SA was not reported as part of your return.  If that is the case, they do not know whether it was spent for medical purposes and would assume it is taxable income that was not reported.

See the following TurboTax help article for information about filing a 2023 amended return:
