Do not amend until your return has been processed by the IRS and any tax liability or refund has been settled. .
The 1040X will not be available until at least mid=February. And as already suggested by Champ @Bsch4477, you should not try to amend until the original return has been fully processed or you can cause confusion which results in a longer delay to process your return.
Thank you very much. What is the source of your information that the 1040X will not be available until mid-February? Is that an IRS issue or a Turbotax issue? I tried to amend a 2023 tax return and e-file and noticed that not only was the 1040X missing but I was also unable to e-file. Hoping that all resolves itself soon as it is already mid-February
That is an IRS issue. The 1040-X is generally not finalized by the IRS until sometime in February on any given year. Then TurboTax the programmers have to do their thing. However, looking at the tool it says the 1040-X is available to print and e-file now. So the update may have happened today so you would need to wait until tomorrow for it to take affect as the updates seem to work the day after.
However, as stated above, it is best not to amend until your return has been processed by the IRS.
The 1040x form is now available; however, when attempting to amend my 2023 return (which was already processed by the IRS), turbo tax says that I did not e file the 1040 with them so I cannot e file the 1040x with them. This is not the case as I definitely did e file using turbo tax. I called turbo tax and they had no idea why it wasn't working and said that I did e file my 1040 with them.
Is turbo tax allowing anyone to e file an amended 1040x for 2023 yet, or should I assume this is a problem for just me?
