There are over 40 different state tax agencies, each doing their own thing. After a Federal return has been accepted, it's unpredictable how soon a state return will be accepted/rejected. Some states are pretty fast (hours), other states may take a day or two, or less commonly, even up to several days in some states. And it can be bogged down a bit after the IRS first opens up for the season, since a lot of state returns which have been backlogged are then suddenly released to the state tax agencies.
A user should get an email when the state return is accepted/rejected, or one can check at anytime by looking at their Tax Home. If it was successfully efiled, the Tax Home should currently show it as "pending" until it is accepted/rejected. So users should check their Tax Home to be sure it was successfully efiled.
@mesquitebean Will last yr DC had accepted my state tax return a.day after the irs accepted my federal and the yr before that and now its been 2 days or three because they was open Monday and it still says pending. DC Tax Revenue was fast at accepting tax returns!

A lot of things are different this year, including a global Pandemic that has severely affected the functioning of many government agencies, as well as late tax law changes that even caused the IRS to delay its opening for about 3 weeks later than they usually open. So as I said, after a Federal return has been accepted, there's no way to predict yet how fast a state will be providing an average acceptance/rejection notice. As long as the status of the state return says "pending" at the Tax Home, it has been efiled, and there's not anything to do at this point until the state accepts/rejects.
A quick follow up to my original post about the pending process. Both of me Federal and State (AZ) returns were accepted, so things are looking up. What's curious, is that right before all this, I was randomly audited by the AZ DOR for my 2016 return, and they determined I owed them roughly $80 (underpayment of taxes and a some interest- no penalties). So, I just sent them a check and washed my hands of it. The check cleared in about 3 days. That tells me the IRS' claim of tax returns processing being delayed by COVID-19 is bogus. They certainly have staff available to TAKE your money, they just want to hang onto what they owe you for as long as they can.
For 3 weeks now
It can take 21 days from the time your return is accepted to the time you receive your refund. It may also take longer due to other reasons, such as the particular forms that were filed, or due to the PATH Act. For more details, please see the Help Article here.
To check your e-filing status and/or track your refund, please see the link here.
The IRS is also operating at mission-critical functions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which means there will be service delays with the following:

How long should my refund be in pending status?
It normally takes 21 days until u get your refund. And if you claim an dependent you still have to.wait.another week after to get it. I dont get mines till March 4th bc i claimed my son but if i didnt claim him ill probably get it sometime next week. And it also depends when you filed but u still have to wait 21days.
When you e-file your tax return, you will receive two emails. The first email only confirms the transmission was received. The second email will state if the IRS or your state either accepted or rejected your e-file. Please see the information in this TurboTax FAQ that explains in more detail the pending process here.
I got the federal refund but still waiting ont the state

Some states are fairly quick with refunds, while other states can take a long time processing returns--even several weeks--as they crack down on detecting fraudulent returns or cope with staff shortages due to Covid, etc. You may be able to get an idea about how long it takes in your state from the FAQs at your state's tax agency website as I will mention below.
Of course, you first need to be sure it was successfully filed. Here's how:
If you efiled, be sure your efiled state return was accepted. If you used Online TurboTax, you can check by looking at the Tax Home in your Online account.
Or did you choose to file by mail instead? TurboTax does not mail it for you. If you chose that method, you have to print, sign, date, and mail it.
The FAQ below tells how to check on a state refund and has a link for your state.
TIP: While you're at your state's tax website, also look for a statement or FAQ that may say about how long it takes to get a refund in your state and how to long to wait before phoning the state tax agency. Many states have such information on their websites.
