I received notice by mail there was an error processing my accepted 2021 return. The IRS is now requesting proof of death of my spouse to complete my joint return.

No, you do not resend your tax return. You send to the IRS what was requested by the IRS and nothing more. The IRS notice you received has instructions on how and where to send the documentation requested.

The notice I received from the IRS specifically states, "Due to an error in processing your return, please resend your tax return to be processed. Also please include requested documents." This would seem like they desire me to resend the document.

OK...So the IRS has requested that you include the tax return that was filed. In this case you would send the tax return with your other documentation.
