Question

How do I amend a return once its submitted and accepted? [desktop, Mac]

Hello!

First, I have read all the online documentation for how to amend a return... that being said, it isn't helpful. Here's the overview.

  1. I need to amend a return because I forgot a 1099-NEC and my AdvCTC payment
  2. This is 2021 tax year
  3. I have submitted federal and state taxes and they have been accepted
  4. I am using the desktop version, so no online instructions are needed.

Here is my issue - when I open my previous return it doesn't go to the home screen asking if I want to amend a return....it says "welcome back" and shows me the final screen with the e-filing status.

The home screen with options does show up if I start a NEW return and say "I'm amending a return." But that is making me update all of my personal information, etc, which doesn't seem correct, turbotax already has that information.

What am I missing here?

Do I open a previous return or start a new one and say "I'm amending"? Do I open a previous return and update the information in that and somehow it will know to amend (note - when I went down that route it didn't seem to work either)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated - I'm feel pretty frustrated right now by lack of documentation to help with this particular issue.

First--if your return has just been e-filed recently and has just been accepted, you need to slow down.  Wait for the original return to be fully processed before you amend.  The IRS is looking for and catching mistakes with the advance child tax credit so you might not need to amend for that.

When your return has been fully processed and you know where you stand with the CTC, then you can amend for the 1099NEC.

Since you have desktop----you open the 2021 return you already filed and go to Other Tax Situations.   Scroll down to Other Tax Forms>Amend a Return-----that will let you amend that specific return.

Thank you for your message and your reply. I was concerned about making a mistake and wanted to correct it as soon as I was able to show I'm putting a good faith effort into correcting my error (aka - I didn't want to have an audit get triggered because I made a mistake).

What I am hearing is that I should wait for my return to be fully processed, see what, if anything has been corrected on the IRS side (for example the AdvCTC) and then create an amendment to update anything that was missed on the IRS side so my taxes are accurate and up to date with them.

If/when this is needed I can then access the amendment information via my desktop application, with the Other Tax Situations category. I will make note of that for my future self. Thanks once again for your response.

Yes---you "got" it.   Wait.   A lot of people have made mistakes with the child tax credit and also with the 3rd EIP payments.  The IRS looks for those mistakes and corrects them for you.
