Other taxpayers have seen this message on their state return.
The information flows from the federal into the state forms so the correction has to take place in the federal form. If the error refers to a W-2 or 1099 and you imported that form into Turbo Tax, perhaps some of the data was damaged in the transfer and is not working properly, even if it looks correct on the page. Deleting the W-2 and manually entering it should solve the problem. If this does not resolve the error, deleting the state form and recreating it from the federal form should solve the problem.
If you imported your W-2 or 1099 from a source outside Turbo Tax
Please click on the Federal Taxes tab
Click on Wages and Income (Or Income and Expenses in Self-Employed)
If you do not see a prompt for your W-2 or 1099,
Scroll down to Wages and Salaries for the W-2
Or Self Employment or Other Common Income for 1099s
Click on Show More and Revisit
Next to your W-2 or 1099, click on the icon of the trash can to delete
Then, on the same page, Click on Add another
And enter the information manually.
Select Done and Continue to save the information and
Review your State Return again to see if the error clears.
If you entered your W-2 or 1099 manually or if one of the above steps does not clear the error, then click on the link below for directions to delete and recreate your state return. This should resolve the error

do i have to redo the entire state form to change the TC40?
You may need to redo the form. Did you follow the instructions posted above?
I am still on details from your W-2. I have clicked all three trashcans twice and i still am not on the1099. because of that none of the boxes line up. So where do you hide the skip button?
I am getting the impression that to use this i must be familiar with of social media, I am not at all. No facebook, no twitter, no Instagram, or anything like that. This probably will mean you will have to be very explicate in where and how for me to find the buttons i need. Thanks
Isn't there any way to get to the TC40 and just let me change some of the information?
Yes, Once you login to TurboTax go to the left menu column click on Tax Tools, then Tools. In the Tools window click on the blue Topic Search button. In the search line enter the name of the entry you need to correct without quotes. Highlight the selection and click GO.
Now I have learned it is faster and easier to just do it than try to incorporate the computer and your program. Since you were no help and all I did was waste my time I am glad be done
I thought instead of having my tax guy do them I would try your system. After spending four days and at least 8 hours or more (four of them today trying to finish and get one question answered so I could send it off) on your website trying to get my it done,
After finally waiting nearly an hour trying to get an answer to what I thought was a simple question, I went into the IRS website and within 30 min low and behold the whole thing was done. The only thing I needed to do on your system was get back to the Ut TC-40 to make some changes and it would have been a done.
I’m having the same problem and frustration
Yes, you can correct the state tax ID number in the federal W-2 screen.
Here's how to find that:
The corrected number will flow to your Utah state tax return. If this doesn't work for you, or you have other questions, reply back to this thread with more details and TurboTax can help you further.
