I need a copy of my tax returns from 2014 and 2015 but all I have is the .tax file. Is there a way to use this to print out the tax return. Unfortunately, the turbo tax deluxe software is on a now defunct computer, as was the tax return. Is there anyone or service who can help with this?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
You could try the TaxPrinter service (not connected with Turbo Tax) to convert a .tax file to pdf at
They might be expensive and it is probably not safe to email tax returns back and forth.
OR get a copy from the IRS -

Reinstalling the program that will open the .taxfile is also an option.
And for future reference you really need to save a PDF of the return as well as the .taxfile for just this reason.
The program that opens the file is on the computer that I am not able to get started. It looks like I can repurchase the software from amazon though. I'll see if that works. Thanks for the thought. I thought TurboTax kept track of all my purchases and tax submissions but apparently that doesn't last this long.
Actually, reinstalling the software does not seem like it will work either because the computer that the software runs on no longer works. Also it was a download version of the software, so even if I purchase the software on amazon it's only a CD version and I no longer have a CD reader.
I wouldn't buy the 2015 program anywhere. Turbo Tax only supports the last 3 years so you wouldn't be able to update the program or download any state you need. And you can't open your return without downloading the state program (if you did a state).
