Hello,
I filled my taxes and got them approved (state, Fed) but couple weeks later I got a mail letter from IRS saying I still owed $1,098. with the reason bellow:
- "we change the refundable Child Tax Credit amount claimed on your tax return because there was an error on Schedule 8812, Credits for Qualifying Children and Other Dependents"
would you please guide me through? is it if its approved and paid or deducted, supposed to be correct?
thanks,
Pablo
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
When you prepared your 2021 tax return you were supposed to enter the amount of advance child tax credit payments you received between July 2021 and December 2021. If you did not enter those payments or entered the amount incorrectly, that is why the IRS is recalculating your refund / tax due. Check your bank records for that period of time to see if you received more than you said you got on your tax return.
And look at your online account with the IRS to see what the IRS says they sent to you.

Thanks for the reply,
On January 4th, 2022, we received a letter saying that the number enter on box 1 must be $900 as 2021 Total Advance Child Tax Credit (AdvCTC) Payments.
Thanks,
Pablo
I entered the amount from the letter I received. Are they saying that is not accurate or that Turbo Tax made a mistake? I got the same letter as Pablo saying I owe more money.
Daniel
If you are married you each get a letter for half. Double check your bank account for the total Advance Child Tax Credit you got for July-Dec.
