I think the issue is a software bug on TT side, not IRS. I think they check somehow the forms for duplicates before submitting to IRS...

That’s why we don’t even get a real IRS rejection code, like these for example: https://www.efile.com/tax-service/tax-return-rejection-codes/

I added one cent to both the gross distribution and the taxable amount boxes on one of the allegedly "duplicate" 1099-Rs, and voila, my returns were accepted by both IRS and my state. 

 

But again, the "proof" that the 1099s were NOT duplicates is that the account numbers differed, albeit slightly.  TurboTax needs to take the necessary steps, as to either its own software or coordination with IRS.

 

Filing by mail really is not the answer for a variety of reasons, including that a state may not accept an efile if the IRS rejected it.   And, the state may expect or require an efile.

It seems to me anyone that has 2 or more1099R's are having problems regardless of the circumstances.   Seems to me this is a Turbo Tax problem.  My CPA friends are not having this problem with their software.  File by Mail is a terrible recommendation by Turbo Tax.

@GabiU, I hit the same issue as others this morning. My Token Number is 816447. After sharing the return, I applied the $0.01 workaround that's been described.

I've got the same issue, rejected because of duplicate 1099-R  (though clear that the 1099-R's are actually different) - annoying!  Is intuit looking at this?

I first had the situation (two identical 1099-R forms except for account #) in tax year 2017. Used CD version of TT to e-file. Went through with no issues.

 

Tax year 2018 did not have a duplicate amount, but I still had multiple forms. Used CD version of TT - again, no issues.

 

Tax year 2019 owed extra taxes and filed by mail. But, I did have the situation with more than one 1099-R and identical amounts. IRS accepted and processed with no issues.

 

As previously stated, tax year 2020 caused me to start this thread.

 

Here’s hoping someone at Intuit has a lightbulb go off in their head to realize they need to do a better job next year and forward!!

I agree with Sooz.

Tax year 2019 had two 1099-R with identical amounts - one for me and one for my spouse.  No problems with e-Filing.

 

Tax year 2020 had two sets of 1099-R with identical amounts - one set from one payor and another set from a different payor.  Again, each set consisted of one for me and one for my spouse.  Clearly TurboTax knows that one of the duplicate is for one person and the other is for another person with multiple distinguishing data fields (taxpayer/spouse, social security numbers, account numbers from payor).  But, system still thinks that there are duplicates?  Makes no sense.

I had a similar situation, but with different amounts and the same account number.   I eliminated the account numbers and the file was accepted.   Apparently, IRS does not require account numbers as they can check re social security number.   Hope this helps.

The problem here is the amounts.

 

I went ahead and added .01 to box 1 and 2 of one of my 1099s and it processed the return.

 

What a ridiculous bug.  I am pretty confident this is a Turbotax problem.

I have exactly the same issue. Got a Rejection email from TT. Will wait for a couple more days to see if TT is  gonna fix it.

On one of the 1099-R's, change the amount to a penny higher and it should allow you to file.  Please see the thread here for more information.

Had the same problem. "Adding penny" worked. Turbo Tax should fix this frustrating and distressing (for most) problem.

E-file Federal return was rejected because of duplicate !099R-R. In checking there was no duplicate. There are 2 1099-R with same dollar amount, one for taxpayer and second for wife. What can I do so I can e-file?

Hi, I double checked my entries and they are correct. Husband and wife receive the same amount from the same broker. I shared my file with agent, token # 818776. Please help fix this bug. Thanks.

Add $0.01 cent on one Form 1099-R and subtract $0.01 cent on the second Form 1099-R
