TurboTax does not help you verify your identity to the IRS or state. If you received a request to verify your identity then you need to follow the instructions to do that so that you can receive your refund.
It doesn't say I have to verify my identity though just my return. "The Minnesota Department of Revenue received your electronically filed 2021 Minnesota Individual Income Tax return on Feb. 5, 2022. To protect your identity, we need to verify your return so we can continue processing it." Which is why I'm confused if I need to verify the return or if Turbo maybe hasn't released it yet until after I pay for filing?
Or is verifying my identity what they mean by "Verify Your Return"?
Does your letter ask you to do anything? If not, you do not have to take any additional steps. If the letter asks you to send documents, call, etc. then you should follow the directions as soon as possible to not delay your refund.
Your return may have set off an ID filter (which probably has nothing to do with you) so your return got pulled from normal processing for a human to look at.
I need to verify my return
I HAVE TO VERIFY MY IDENTITY
Sometimes the IRS chooses returns randomly to request verification of identity and sometimes there is something on the return that triggers the request. No matter why the IRS has required you to verify your identity, you need to follow their instructions in order to receive your refund. If you do not verify your identity you will not get your refund.
