What tax year is listed on the Form 1099-G you received?
What? If you received unemployment in tax year 2021, the 2021 1099G goes on your 2021 tax return. And....there will be federal tax on it. That tax law that waived federal tax on the first $10,200 of unemployment received was ONLY for unemployment received in 2020. That law has not been extended for 2021.
If you really mean you received a 1099G for 2020 and did not put it on your 2020 tax return, you have to amend 2020 and enter it.
Which tax year are you asking about?
...or, is the 1099-G for a state tax refund, and not unemployment
If the 1099-G was for tax year 2021, it may also be worth noting that you may be experiencing a case of identity theft where someone else used your information to receive unemployment benefits. Your state is sending you this form because they think you’re the one that received this income.
If you received a Form 1099-G from your state reflecting unemployment benefits, but didn’t actually receive unemployment benefits last year, you should contact your state to request a revised form (corrected 1099-G).
You can find your state’s contact information in the TurboTax Help article What if I got a 1099-G but never actually received unemployment benefits?.
