Hello,

i just recently made a mistake on my taxes. I originally filed independent on my taxes by mistake and then within 24 hours i amended it online and filed as a dependent. I still need to send in my amendment form through the mail but how will this process work? Will my parents be affected with filing their taxes until I send this in through the mail? Can I contact the irs ahead of time to correct this?

You can't amend your return online; an Amended Return has to be printed and mailed in.

It does not 'catch up' with your originally filed return and correct it.  It takes several weeks for the IRS to process an amended return.

Since you filed your return as a non-dependent, your parents will not be able to Efile their return, as your SSN was already Efiled on your return.

They will need to print and mail in their return.

Okay. So I will still receive my original refund amount? Will it take my parents a long time to receive their refund if they have to send theirs through the mail?
