Do you know if this will keep me from getting my federal return processed
It gives you the option to keep going and just come back to fill state whenever the form is ready. Now, I do not know if proceeding without state will delay processing. However, considering they are technically separate and usually process differently anyway, I do not see it being an issue.
I am not a tax professional and this is not legal advice. This is just my personal opinion. Hope this helps!
The fed and state are processed by totally separate taxing authorities so filing the fed without the state will not affect anything. Folks file them separately all the time. The only thing you cannot do is efile a state BEFORE the feds.
Will this delay our time on getting the refund money
I’m not understanding. Why do I have to fill out this form? I’ve done my taxes for years and never had to do one of these. What is it? Why now?

Are you full year resident of North Carolina? If so, then you have to file a North Carolina Form D-400, Individual Income Tax Return
Form D-400, Individual Income Tax Return for tax year 2021 is estimated to be finalized and available in TurboTax on 02/17/2022
Yes I am. Always have been but never had to do one of these. Is it a new thing?

No. The Form D-400 has been the North Carolina state income tax return for years.
How long will we have to wait for our D-400 forms
It appears the D-400 form should be available on 2/17/2022. Please click here for a list and available dates for all North Carolina forms.
Mine says the same thing not able
to file until 2/17/2022 but this is my 2nd yr filling as married
@Kirseyrod Once the form becomes available you will be able to file your return.
I've done my own taxes as long as I can remember and I've never even heard of this form. What is it exactly and why now? Can we file federal taxes and just wait on this form for state? So confused
Yes, you can file your federal return now, and your state return later.
Please see the TurboTax Help article Can I file my federal taxes now and skip my state for later? for more information.
North Carolina Form D-400, 2021 Individual Income Tax Return, is the form that all individuals required to file an individual North Carolina state return, including part-year residents and non-residents, must file. See 2021 D-401 Individual Income Tax Instructions for more information.
It’s not yet available in TurboTax. Please see the TurboTax Help article State forms availability table for TurboTax individual (personal) tax products for more information.
