1099-C

After I filed my taxes I received a Form 1099-C for a cancellation of Debt. How do I put it in my taxes if I already filed?

You will have to wait for the IRS to either Accept or Reject your filed federal tax return.
If the return is rejected you can make the necessary changes and e-file again.
If the return is accepted you will have to amend your original tax return. An amended return, Form 1040-X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 20 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return.

Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for amending a tax return - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-return/amend-change-correct-return-a...

I've never had to pay on my return (lucky enough to always get a refund), do I have to pay it all at once or over time?

You can pay the amount owed in one payment or if you are having difficulty with a single payment then you can request an installment payment using the IRS online payment plan after you have filed the amended return with taxes owed - https://www.irs.gov/payments/online-payment-agreement-application

You have several options to pay the balance due.  You can pay when you file the return, select a date to pay the filing deadline or set up an arrangement with the IRS to make payments on the balance due.  Remember that if you do not pay in full by the tax deadline, you will pay back interest on the balance due.  For more information, see the link below:

I have an id.me account under my name. If the 1099-C is in my wife's name, but we filed a joint return, do I have to create an id.me account under her name, or can I use my id.me account?

Each ID.me account is for one tax return. Your spouse can us you account.

Once I start making the payments, am I able to make additional payments separate from the agreement to get it paid off faster?

Yes, they will always take extra money to pay your debt, just don't miss a payment.

I'm having an issue with applying for a payment plan. When I plugged in all my info I got this message:

Online Payment Agreement (OPA)

We are unable to complete the transaction you requested.

Please Contact the IRS

Please call [phone number removed] ext. 684 for further assistance.

When I called the wait was about an hour and I never got thru.  I will be trying again today.

I have a few questions:

1. On my amended return it says: "The following return has been transmitted". But it won't let me click "File amended return" without saying how I will pay the taxes. Did my amended return get filed, or can I request an extension until the payment issue is resolved?

2. Any idea what the issue could be with the payment plan?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My question is how did you apply for the payment plan?  Did you apply through TurboTax or did you apply at the IRS website.  Various IRS agents I have spoken with have said it is best if you apply from their website as applying from tax preparation software sometimes "falls through the cracks".  Their words not mine.

If you did not apply at the IRS website this is link to begin the process:
